I still prefer LCD over Plasma. It's funny how almost all 1080p LCDs are priced higher than the Plasma 1080p

Your not taking into account what spyhop just mentioned though. Those are 1080p "supported" Plasmas and not 1080p "NATIVE" plasmas.

The little sticker on the Plasma saying 1080p does not nessasarily mean the plasma's native res is 1920x1080.

Actually, usually if they're sporting that 1080p sticker it is a 1080p native TV

nah thats where they trick you.

when they have 1080p native sticker it means they have 1080 vertical pixels, but it dosn't guarantee the standard 1920 horizontal pixels.

i've seen so much plasmas that have 1080p stickers, and they don't have True 1080x1920 resolution.

i havn't been in the market for HDTVs since last year, but i did extensive research on them. I would call myself a semi-expert .. (well i at least knew way more about the TVs than the salesmen at the stores )

also lots of TVs say they "support HDTV" and they really just dumb down the resolution.

you have to make sure your TV has the required vertical X horizontal resolution so you're not tricked.

if the OP is going for a TV to use as a PC monitor as well, i recommend an LCD.

If its for a home-theatre, then they might like a plasma, but the colors dull-down after a while, and the true 1080p sets are more expensive. Plus you need to sit far away to protect your eyes.
with an LCD tv, you can dim the Backlight and sit a bit closer so it dosn't hurt your eyes.

I baught an 40" LCD 1080p HDTV and i love it; i use it mostly as a PC monitor and its awsome.

My brother baught a new 1080p 46" LCD, and his has even better colors than mine from last year...

If you buy the newest LCD screens, they look as good, or better than plasmas.
Plus they don't have screen burn-in.

but be prepared to spend around $2000 for a good HDTV.

I got my Sony Bravia 42" LCD 1080p(1920x1080 native) last year and I love it. Colors are incredibly vibrant and the contrast between black and color is amazing. I use it to watch movies mostly, but sometimes I like running PC games on it.

How LCD and Plasmas work at the pixel level

i found that site after buying a toshiba regza. good thing they had nothing but good things to say about it! but the site clears up some myths about plasmas vs lcds that you may want to check out.

sony and samsung are the way to go

they used to both get their screens from the same manufacturing plant (or so i've read on a HDTV forum..)

but i'm not sure if thats the case anymore...

Nice tips. I'll have to pepper the sales people about their screen before I buy one later this summer .

make sure you do your own research, the salesmen usually don't know much about the TVs they sell!
and they also try and sell you stuff you might not want/need.

i remember asking a bestbuy's employee about whether Plasmas that said 1080p really had 1920x1080 resolution, and he didn't even know what i was talking about

For the love of god don't buy a $120 Monster HDMI cable. Or even the lesser priced $60 cables.

Instead go to monoprice.com and buy just as good a cable for $12.

Plasmas are better looking, but they have their turn offs.

1: They get too hot.

2: Every 5 to 8 years, you have to drain (refresh) them=get a new one

3: A 62" inch 1080p plasma wieghs about 105 pounds (im serious)

4: High Miantnance.

At Sears, the ratio of returned plasmas to returned LCD's are 5-1.

Wow cotton.....you inticapated me

If you ask some Chinese guys... you can get 10 for $10... seriously... First tip: always ask China or Taiwan or Malaysia whenever it comes to electronic stuffs, especially cables.

Anyway, there are quite a few LCD panel manufacturers. What's so amazing is that... quite a few HDTV models from Sony and Samsung might as well have been manufactured directly from Samsung. Same goes for some Mitsubishi and Toshiba ones (these are mostly manufactured by Toshiba). Panasonic and other brands seem to use panels from some other manufacturers, though. Keep digging deeper, and you'll start hearing names you probably wouldn't have even thought of yourself.

Question are most HDTV lcd panels super twisted nematic, super n-plane switching, or super patterned vertical alignment based?

I would guess TN as thats the most cost effective and many hdtvs contain 120hz (6ms) technology that likely can still only be achieved cost effecctive wise with tn.
