Laptop runs slow+screen slowly fades to white?

this just happened earlier today nd its chappin my mothers a**.....never seen it before. unless im in safe mode. windowsXP starts loading but when its at the splash screen loading it. it just keeps on doing that........andddd it slowly fades to white.....when i first saw i thought it was a WMP visualization...=]........so......any ideas?

any help would be awesome guys
