Hum...to correctly answer this question,you'll need someone who have tested the 3 cards.When I say "tested", I mean someone who made real benchmarks with the 3 ones (with/without aliasing, with this or this game etc....).
Why not see the Hardwaresecrets review? So you'll have a better idea about the performances...

8500GT is a ****ty card, I'm suprised NVIDIA let this card have 8xxx in it's name. Despite supporting DX10 don't expect it to run any DX10 games at playable speeds anyways hehe. So better choose some of the DX9 cards rather than 8500GT.

What are you using it for, mainly PC games or an emulator? And what games, if you have any in mind.

Do not get an 8500GT! No matter how fancy or cheap you may find it. A 6600GT is just as powerful as that card, and the 6600gt is a 3year old mainstream card!

If you want a cheap graphics card get a 1650 pro. Or save up for a ATI X1950pro/xt. I'd highly recommend getting the 1950 because its a phenomenal card for its price.

Even if you are not considerring buying the 1950s, try to find the 7600GT. This card has been through a series of clearance sell at my near hardware stores lately and it sometimes has the same price or lower than the 7600GS.

According to my research on such cards, Cheesus seems to describe it perfectly, as fast as a 6600GT, which means, a 7600GS could even beat it.

thats more likely to be your power supply blew up (cheap one was it?), then fried your video card by sending a surge of power through it

Umm both of you are correct, everything's relative. What you think is a good card, some people might think it's a sucky card. Price/value wise I think it's a decent card, nowhere anything special, I think X1950 cards that are meantioned above is a bit better than average for example, those used to cost like $400 for a 1950XT when they were launched almost 11 months ago, now they are like $150. xD

No, it was actually fairly expensive, my father paid like 150$ for it, rather low price but still.

Being expensive doesn't necessarily mean it was a good one.

the best card for your money:

DX9 = ATI X1950pro
DX10 = 8600GS/GT or HD 2600pro/XT
