popping/missing sounds in Quake 4 with openAL selected for audio

i get strange popping or brief absence of sound while playing quake 4 with openl al. what i mean is, i have been playing the game for months now using my sound card to put out basically. quake 4 has EAX capabilities, which makes games like that (fps, action), sound sooo much better. this is easiest if you own the game and are familiar with the menus, for now i will just leave it at this: the game is patched to the most recent(and probably last) version, and i have the latest drivers for my sound card. Prey has a similar EAX option you can enable, but the game does not give popping or missing audio, it works flawlessly. so is there some kind of openAL driver i can download, or some other way to fix the issue with EAX in quake 4?

Give us information on your sound hardware. Regardless, it's always a good idea to update to the latest sound drivers if you're getting issues such as this.
