Nvidia all the way. Ati was only good with its 9800 card and that's all.

I'd rather think someone has been living blinded by fanboyism ever since... Not that you can't have a personal preference of course, but don't let brand preference cloud you when the other camp offers you more bang for the buck

I had to quote someone. No offence plz.
The new radeon 2x00 design shows some extra muscles with newer catalyst releases, placing the cheaper 2600xt gddr3 next to 8600GT.
This matters if you don't decide to buy a gf8800 or a 2900XT card.
And some balancing is required, for example using shaders at max with the radeon and "more demanding texturing" with gf - to get a fair ammount of fps while looking at a nice image with both picks (8600GT(s), 2600xt).

They also produced decent drivers before christmas time when most of the games come out every year. So...the 2x00 series is sort of good if you want to spend 90EUR.

And...

There might be an early hope for DX10 now that 8800GT is out.

Nvidia admits defeat in G92 vs. RV670 battle - The INQUIRER

and in other news, ATI has planned for an HD 2950XT2X (r680) which is like the ati version of the Geforce 7950GX2. I've heard that the R680 can score over 20,000 3dmark 06 points *Drools*

I have used both ATI and nVidia in the past and I would have to lean more in nVidia's favor at the moment.

It will be interesting to see how the Geforce 9800GX2 and the HD3870 X2 dual gpu cards compete with each other. The HD3870 X2 is available now and the 9800GX2 should be arriving within a few weeks.

I'm not really too excited or impressed. I would prefer if they dedicate all the silicon on the cards to graphics and leave the physics for the emerging multi-cored cpus. Neither do I want to pay even more for my videocards or pay the same but have potentially inferior graphic performance.

Since your using Linux, I recommend sticking with NVIDIA cards. ATI OpenGL drivers under Linux are absolutely terrible....

They aren't too good on windows either. I remember the time I brought an emulation project to my university (which used OpenGL), and the program kept crashing. Fortunately, the computers had Visual Studio so I was able to debug it. Turns out it was ATI's OpenGL drivers crashing for no good reason. All of the PC's there for the students had Radeon X300. I was quite disappointed.

I also had some very bad experiences under Windows with ATI cards and OpenGL apps, due to bad drivers...

Case in point: The Glide3x wrapper including in Glide64. We had to make hacks to workaround slowdown issues, thanks to ATI's GLSL shader compiler being dodgy (not supporting moduli), and not supporting texture formats that it should. And yet ATI cards still have issues. I seriously wonder if the AMD driver devs even read the OpenGL specs proper when implementing the driver support.

That's interesting considering they've been touting their horns about their much improved OpenGL drivers for over a year now. I wonder what ever became of their OpenGL rewrite that they've been working on for the past 2 years. It's probably an issue with priorities at this point.

Obviously its all hype and no show. ATI keeps developing nice cards, but thier drivers keep holding them back. A flawed combination. At least NVIDIA have rock solid drivers for Windows/Linux/whatever, and solid hardware to match.

NVIDIA's drivers are starting to get bad too. Lately almost all games using the QIII engine (i.e. Doom3) are completely broken. It's Direct3D support isn't doing to well either. DirectX 3.0 games are mostly broken (i.e. MDK, AvP Gold, and more) as well as some newer Direct3D series games (such as the entire Theif series). But NVIDIA's drivers are still the best.

I used ATI before, then switched to NVidia. The difference was enormous. NVidia had so many more customizable options.
