Nvidia is a step ahead of ATI. Intels a huge step ahead of AMD. And since AMD owns ATI, they fund all their resources. And AMDs lost billions by purchasing ATI and by having their share of the CPU market ravaged by Intel. Both Intel and Nvidia have a huge amount of money now to put towards R&R. Got to spend money to make money, and right now, AMD/ATI are on the verge of losing a lot more.
I guess (yes, guess) that someone being behind and on the verge to lose a lot more - is desperate.

And Ati isn't that desperate. They supply nice gfx. chips for XBOX360 and Wii.
Summing theese into the final count (and RSX chips for nVidia) could display a different big picture.

Hardly. The sales of Xbox360 have been on the decline for awhile now, and the Wii is soon to follow. Most people who want a Wii already has one, since it's so darn cheap compared to its competition. The Xbox360 has been out for awhile now, the only people buying them are ones who either replacing a broken one or are going to buy the upcoming HD version, Xbox360 Elite.

No new consoles are planned for the next few years, AFAIK anyways, so ATI/AMD can't rake profits that way. Unless they step up their efforts in the PC GPU market, everyone will be wary of them. Even me, someone whos all purchased video cards are ATI.

NVidia didn't really make very good video cards until GeForce 3 and NV2A. The Geforce 2 sucked ass like every other NVidia GPU before it. 3dfx Voodoo was better.

lol yeah, but I heard the 5950 wasn't too bad, but the 5200 was a crap card. Been stuck with one of those for years, but hey, at the time it was better than Intel graphics. Even my 3dfx Voodoo 3 outperformed that card!

But the 5200 beat 9250SE. Ati struck back with full force by deploying 9600SE and 9550 reinforced with 9600-256MB.

Then again, you're comparing a vanilla 5200 with a crippled 9250. Try a 5200 LE or whatever the worthless version was called and compare it to the 9250.

Ahh, good old times.
And some 5200's were crippled with 64-bit only memory interface. Wasn't mentioned by kind vendors in general though.
Dunno if a 5200LE was out (there was 5600XT ) but 5200 ULTRA was sort of normal. Didn't sell too good.

Yup, that's what they usually did on the lower segment, like our 9200SE, which also has a 64bit interface. Slow, but it supports a lot of games, and I never really heard my brother complain about it. I told him that if he'd spend 60 bucks he could have made it a nice gaming pc, but he's cheap

The 9500pro and 9800SE were real hits as most of the 9500pro and some 9800SE were modable into full 8-pipers.

I liked the 9600/128 since mine was easy to OC to 9600pro level.
Some recommended 5900LX as the best buy but i never trusted the 5x00 series too much.

5200 Ultra wasn't just "sort of normal." I used both the 5200 and the 5200 Ultra... as well as the 9200. With the same 64-bit architect, the 5200 still performed way better than the 9200, and it was very noticeable in games such as Counter-Strike Source... or Need For Speed Underground. :/ If you don't believe that I've used a 9200 to provide those comparisons, I can take a picture of the box and the card... because I still have them here. For the same price tag, I think the 5200 would be a better choice than the 9200... when it comes to gaming.

Never considered buying a 5200.
I put an eye on the 8500LE/9100 and some time later on 9600/5600.
9600 had nicer OC and better shaders.

And i agree about the 92x0 series. A Gf4MX with simple shader support.

Yeah true, last time I upgraded my fx5500 to a ati 9800pro, I never look back to the low-to-midrange again, and I am loyal to ATI ever since, especially in the multimedia department it can never be beaten.

Yeah my 6800 vanilla could be unlocked for 16 pipelines and 6 vertex shader.
Great times.

I heard rumors that the drivers should acctualy be moded for full performance in games.
The default driver AI allowed the gained performance in 3DMarkxx though.

not really.. cause ATI's HD 2900XT 1GB card comes very close to the 8800 ultra. This isn't as great as the release of the 9700
