socket478 Pentium 4 2.8GHz problems

Salvaging a 3 year old socket478 computer for my nephew. Originally had a Celeron 2.0GHz (Northwood core) that I decided to ditch and replace with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4. Problem is,when I placed the new processor in, I get no response or beeps whatsoever. The system turns on but there's no display. I checked the processor for bent pins and not one pin out of place. This is the second 2.8GHz P4 I've tried on the board and still I get nothing. Tried putting back the Celeron in and it runs fine. Checked motherboard manual (Redfox/Biostar U8568 PRO) and it says it can support P4s with core speeds of 2.8GHz,400/533 FSB. I've already updated the BIOS but still nothing. Any ideas? coz i am stumped..

this info might help if anyone has a workaround for this:

PQI 512MB DDR-SDRAM PC-2700 (166 MHz) - [DDR-333]
board : Redfox/Biostar U8568 PRO (P4X266E-8235)
- NorthBridge : VIA P4X266 (VT8753)
- SouthBridge : VT8233A PCI to ISA Bridge
generic 500W PSU

And this is the label on the proc itself:

INTEL '03
PENTIUM 4
2.80GHZ/1M/533
SL7E2 COSTA RICA
3441B253

4444B200
0178

Socket478 isn't compatible with Pentium 4 cpu...and that motherboard you stated look like an antique/ancient. Nowadays, you can a motherboard for P4 at a very cheap price like $50 USD and under. To be honest, P4 doesn't really need/deserve a new motheboard, you can just buy a used working board for under $5iwyg=0ysiwyg=0

S478 supports the P4

And are you sure the cpu meets these requirments.:
Intel Pentium 4 and Celeron processors
Up to 2.8GHz (Pentium 4) and 2.0GHz (Celeron)
533MHz FSB

As the parts are correct (at least by what You named) only thing I can think of is CMOS reset (not that I think it will help)... Also how long You waited for beepcodes sometimes it takes long (I've seen 1 minute on bad DDR)

waited for minutes actually, still nothing. ram's fine; if it wasnt it wouldnt run the Celery or there'd be beepcodes. and yes ive double checked the board does support P4s up to 2.8GHz. board works fine with P4s as ive tried it with a P4 2.2GHz way back. im just not getting to the bottom of the problem here this time. i mwan, everything's all set. should work like a charm, but is doesnt.

I thought P4 (Prescott) are socket 775... or must be them really early P4...

Northwoods/Willamettes were socket478's. The later ones (Gallatins/Prescotts) made the LGA775 leap.

AFAIK Prescott was 478 socket also. (actually what You have is Prescott D0)

Anyway are You sure that CPU works ? just checked mobo support it should be working. Hmm, another idea =( on mobos site they're saying P4 (533) from bios version 1.0. I'm pretty sure lot of mobos required bios update from Northwood to Prescott so they maybe didn't released new bios and only earlier cores are supported...

SL7E2 (Intel Pentium 4)

according to biostar site your mobo can support your p4 2.8 and this is the only part that you had change, if you got some other rig thats socket 478 try your cpu their, this is also a long shot but try using a ddr 400 ram.

Not sure if you have resolved this problem yet or not. I have the same CPU chip and was trying to install in a Biostar U8668-D with the latest bios. I have also received the no video and no error beeps. When I return my P4 1.6 to the system, everything works great. The problem does not seem to be a FSB problem, but the amount of L2 cache. It appears that there are a limited number of motherboards that will accept the 1MB of L2 cache. I am currently researching motherboards that will accept the stepping code of SL7E2.

The asrock p4vm890,

it's cheap and compatible and has a PCI-e slot unlike most 478 boards
my brother has my old p4 pc now with that board, never had a problem with it

Edit: I should also add it has a 2.8ghz Prescott in it now,
think it's the same stepping as yours too
