Prescott CPU temperatures

I'd like to ask Prescott-users about their CPU-temperatures, specially Pentum 4 3,0GHz< users. I've been wondering are they really as hot as people keep telling. Mine is not.

What is your CPU:s current temperature?

Which is your maximum/minimum temperature?

What cooling are you using?

I can tell that my Celeron D 2,8GHz stays usually at 40-46 Celsius. I have a Akasa cooler and Deltaco Bigfan Power Source.

Same processor as Metalmurphy here, idles at 46C and goes up to 60 during gaming.

Using this cooler

Well there's so many versions around of "netburst" Pentium 4-like CPUs:

- Williamette
- Northwood
- Gallatin
- Prescott
- Prescott 2M
- Cedar Mill
- Smithfield (Pentium D 8xx)
- Presler (Pentium D 9xx)
(might have forgot one)

Chances are some people think they have a Prescott but have one of the others. The hot ones are the ones based on Prescott/Prescott 2M & Smithfield Pentium D 8xx series core. Usual temps I hear of these were like 55 - 60C idle and towards 70-75C
on stock cooler, was like almost a requirement to change that cooler to something better unless airflow in comp case was good. I know an IRC friend who had his Prescott 3.2GHz running at up to 76C at load and it was starting to throttle with the stock cooler.

The latest & final version of Pentium 4 is Cedar Mill (single core P4) and Presler (dual core, Pentium D 9xx series) based on 65nm tech but no actual changes other than this 65nm tech causes the power consumption & heat output to be A LOT lower. 4GHz+ overclocks were fairly easy on decent aircooling on these chips even. I'd say "normal" stock cooler temps on these are sth in the range 40-45C idle and 55-65C load.

Well of course it's clear it's about the Prescott here, and I think it's the socket 478 which is the most common one, right?

I didn't have that many problems with the temperatures on the stock cooler, but it sounded like a wind turbine, I could hardly do some homework on my pc.
