I m going to buy an athlon this summer....
Which Mother board is the best for athlon?
(Man could say I ve been underground for a long time)

I suppose that you're going to buy one of those new nec-plus-ultra C-Athlon.
So, I recommend you to buy the MSI K7 MASTER. It has the AMD-760 Chipset (one of the best chipsets on the market!) and supports DDR-RAM. Price: 200$

Well, by the summer, most companies should have KT266 solutions out, and when it's not having performance issues, it can own the AMD-760.

My advice is to just wait until you're about to go buy it, and take a look at what's best, by reading some reviews...

If I had waited for a more powerful computer, I shouldn t have bought mine!

BTW, yup I research performance (the kinda machine that can hold 1 year easily w/o being too old in that time passed)

I think that I ll buy some magazines until August.I think That I m going to buy an Athlon T 1.2 ghz.

Rargh, I just got an Athlon T-Bird 1.2 ghz and a Soyo SY-K7VTA Pro mother board. The T-Bird is fantastic. If you wait and get a T-Bird 1.2 ghz you'll surely not be disappointed. CD, what do you think of the motherboard I have? You know a lot abot these, so I'm asking if it is a good one in your opinion. I am very satisfied w/it, I got it w/the processor and fan in a combo. Thanks for any reply.

I haven't had much experience with SOYO mainboards, but I don't recall hearing anything bad about them...

Personally, I believe the top mainboard manufacturers for VIA-based AMD solutions are MSI, ABIT, and ASUS...

I've got an MSI K7T Pro2-A, and I've had no problems, except for some initial ones with a bios flash gone awry, that took me out of comission for a month, but it wasn't the boards fault =P

The SY-K7VTA Pro certainly gives great performance with the cheaper KT133A chipset, although with DDR SDRAM being the same price as SDRAM now, getting an AMD 760 based board will guarantee you solid performance. Apart from the rather dodgy positioning of the ATX power connector, the SY-K7VTA Pro isn't a bad board. Nice to see them ditching CNR/AMR in favour of a legacy ISA slot.

Epox are making a name for themselves, especially among overclockers. As CD said MSI, Abit and Asus certainly produce some of the best boards out there.

The KT266 is quite immature atm, i wouldn't buy a mobo based on that chipset until some issues are resolved, reviews can't quite be trusted as a different revision is being sold into the retail channel than what MSI sent out to reviewers. It seemed MSI rushed the board to be the first to retail with a KT266 solution.

Remember that B class Athlons (200fsb) run fine at 266, as long as you close the L1 bridges and bring the multiplier down. There isnt much point paying the premium for a C class chip.

and how might one go about doing that? I have a Biostar M7MKE mobo w/ Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG

I can't seem to find a Socket A motherboard manufactured by Biostar with that model name.. are you sure you have the correct name?

I ask because you need to be able to change the multiplier on the board, assuming the chip won't run stable at the speed generated when the fsb is at 133 as opposed to 100. With the 750 you might be in luck, on a 266 fsb (which is actually 133 DDR) the clock speed generated is 1Ghz (7.5*133) which is fairly attainable with good cooling. But does your motherboard even support 133 fsb?

That's a Slot A board, unfortunatly Slot A will never run at 133. You might be able to reach 110 by overclocking the fsb.

For me, myself...

I want to buy Abit KT7E via KT133E.... Because:
1. cheap mobo
2. cheap memory (SDRAM PC-133 CAS2) than DDR RAM
3. good performance, on par with Abit KT7A

Proccessor, maybe Athlon 850+GlobalWin WBK38 (cheap too), overclock it to around 1 GHz
