WTH is wrong with the ram at my place?
Hey guys, got a problem here. I got myself some new RAM, KHX3200A/1G (kingston 1GB 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL2 2-3-2-6-1T) Pretty good stuff seeing how I now can run FEAR maxed out at great fps and Oblivion doesn't stutter anymore, however, the games keep crashing to desktop and sometimes they will cause a complete system reboot. I never had these problem with my old ram. Also, my motherboard allows me to run this ram to run at given timings, except at 2T, does this matter in terms of compatibility? I am tempted to assume running at 2T wouldn't matter as it is a slower timing, but I might be wrong, someone please help me out with this. Btw, the symptons highly resemble the problems I used to have when we just bought the family computer, where everything worked fine except with games (more ram intense), we had the ram replaced and it worked fine. The only difference with this case is that here Memtest86 didn't show any error after 5 and a half hours of testing. I think I should still send it back as DOA though. Also, I put the old 512 DDR400 in the family computer, but now it keeps on crashing or it doesn't boot at all, yet it ran perfectly fine on my own pc. WTH is going on here? I checked the jumper settings, even let the ram run at 333mHz instead of 400 because with 400 it started to beep like guinnea pig. At 333 it did run, for an evening, this morning it's beeping as well and the monitor stays in standby mode. Does anyone have any explanation for this? ![]() Thanks in advance.

2T does increase stability, but it slows down your computer. With Athlon 64's, it doesn't hurt them very much, but I'm not familiar with its effects on Pentium 4's. I would recommend trying a CMOS clear and putting in the settings from scratch. How much voltage are you giving the memory?

From what I've gathered from benchmarks 2T is slightly slower indeed, but not by a huge margin (nothing a slight OC can beat, according to them). Also, I did a CMOS reset when I tried setting the Dram Driving to 'high' instead of 'normal' The problem with my bios is that when I want to set the timings manually I can only adjust CAS latency and Bank Interleave (see screenshot). But when I do that, I will get the following timings according to CPU-Z 2 4 4 9 2T, not really quick I'd say ![]() Anyway, I suppose my ram running at 2 3 2 6 2T isn't the reason why it's crashing, as 2T is slower. About voltage, I think it is getting the default? I don't really know how to check it.

Not all boards will tell you what the voltage is currently at or will let you change it. The manual might tell you where you can check it in the BIOS. I'm guessing that bank interleave setting is the one that changes it from 1T to 2T on your board? For testing, try running Prime95's blend torture test mode.

Nah, bank interleaving is something different as far as I know. It's some kind of pipelining like function for ram. I think I've figured out how to check the voltage, I'll edit this post later on. I don't think I'm able to change it though. Hopefully the bios does a better job at reporting it than Speedfan does, cause I think this board doesn't give the proper information about voltages and temps. I found that it gets 2.640 V

Yeah, I was going to say to turn on bank interleaving because I knew what it normally did, but all I saw was the CAS latency and the interleave shut off, so I figured it was another case of BIOS Engrish or something .Try upping the voltage a notch or two. I run my pair of 512 MB HyperX sticks at 2.8-2.9v and they seem to not get very hot.

Well the problem is I can't adjust voltages on my mobo, wish I had a nice one like you Also, they should run properly on 2.6 as well.Anyway, I decided to send the company a message about a death on arrival. We'll see where it will end up. Currenly I am running with my old ram again, and the system is nice and stable. Do you have any clue why this ram wouldn't run on the other computer while it runs perfectly fine here?

Could be the density of the RAM chips or some other weird property of the memory. Checked for BIOS updates? As for my sticks, they say 2.6v as well, but I have to give them 2.8 or more to do 2-3-2-11 @ PC3200 speeds. Mine have Winbond CH-5 chips though, so they can tolerate way more than 3 volts . Yours probably have something else, like Samsung UCCC, Infineon CE-6, or some weird Micron chip because of the higher RAM amount.

Well that would be rather misleading if I'd have to raise voltages in order to get such timings on pc3200 speeds. It's not how they advertise it, that's for sure. I don't know what chips they're using though, I think it will void my warranty if I did

Yeah, it's not worth the effort to find out. It took me over an hour to get the heatspreader off of one stick, and I banged up the top of it a little bit .

After hunting around a bit on other websites, I found a list that has your sticks near the bottom. They look like they have Infineon BE-5 chips on them. Now to find out what the characteristics of those line of chips are...

i concur with the voltage notching, i remember from my KV8-MAX3 days, ram actually needs notching up a little the more sticks you use. for example if you have 2 sticks needing 2.6v, one may work fine at 2.6, but for 2 you will find you will require around 2.7 to 2.8 for it to be stable. Unfortunately on my old board it was increadibly picky and itd refuse to boot 90% of the time unless you upped the voltage

Well, I haven't found anything on BE-5 chips, but CE-6's are common in high-end 1 GB PC4000 sticks and seem to overclock about as well as other chips like UCCC. That doesn't mean that they will necessarily do as well though. For example, Samsung TCB0 is a lot different than TCCD .But yeah, what Refraction says is true as well. Every board reacts differently to every set of sticks. Some sets even have separate timings for Intel and AMD boards. Unless you run yours over 3 volts, you won't have any issues with them. Good luck with the replacement .

Seems like the luck wishes didn't help much, at least not for tonight... I recieved my ram, no questions asked, so it's top quality service. I put it in and immediately cleared the cmos to start with clean settings. Put the timing to Cas 2 setting, 2 3 2 6 , but with 2T instead of 1T, because it does that automatically. Now after having played gunz for half an hour, my computer reset itself. After it was done getting back to windows I decided to try my luck with Oblivion, but after half an hour it crashed to desktop, and also Spysweeper gave an error message. What's going wrong here? Is it the fact I'm letting it run at 2T rather than the 1T it can handle? Or should I simply stick with slower timings? When I run CPU-Z it gives the following info, see screenshot: At 200mHz, what I'm running it at now, it is 3 3 3 8. I think it's a mistake made by CPU-Z, or by my mobo giving incorrect info. Any help here would be appreciated, I'll be doing some more testing, and perhaps lowering the timings, to see what will happen. As long as it will be stable I'm more than happy... but so far I'm not really lucky

Tried Memtest86+ again? I think tests 5 and 8 in particular point out errors due to timings being too tight, so you may want to loop those. Try loosening it to 2.5-3-3-7 or so, and see if there's a BIOS update for your motherboard. Try running it at 1T, for some reason it may not like being at 2. For example, Winbond BH-5 usually doesn't run well or at all with a CAS latency of 3, just 2.5 or lower . Every type of memory chip has its own quirks, so you're probably going to have to play around with every setting to see what works.

Well the problem is that I can not configure it manually completely. It allows to set Bank Interleaving, Dram driving, Latency in general, and it has presets of 'auto by spd', 'turbo', 'ultra'. When set to turbo it runs at 2 3 2 6 2T which is closest to what the ram can do, unless CPUz is not giving correct info. I'll try some more stuff. At this moment I highly doubt the ram is the cause of the crashing it does, with the previous module I also let Memtest run for almost 6 hours doing all the tests and it couldn't find anything at all. Loosening it to 4 4 4 9 2T didn't help either, those are the settings CPUz gives when I select the CAS3.0 setting manually. Well I think I should just try to update my bios then, according to the websites these are the things it fixes: Quote:
Now to find me my old floppy drive ![]() Bah, just **** it... It gives me crap when I try to hook up the floppy drive again, so that ain't an option, so no bios update either. I'll ask a friend to see if they have some old crapass no name ram module for me to test and see if it works. It wouldn't surprise me to see it work better than this. >_<
