Harddisk recovery/repair?

Can anyone tell me how to fix a harddisk. It's seagate 80GB IDE 7200RPM. The IC on board had burn that made the HD motor can't spin anymore. Is it possibble to replace the board with others board with the same brand(seagate) even the capacity(etc. 120GB) is different? I want to recover my files in that HD. Anyone?

It's doubtful... the firmware on the drive keeps track of drive geometry... if it's not the exact same model, it probably won't work. Check e-bay for another of the exact same model if it's no longer on the market.

EDIT: Also, bear in mind that the firmware also tracks data like bad sectors and such... I wouldn't guarantee that it would work even if you did replace the board with an exact copy given that there's unique data to the drive being stored

You are out of luck.

If the chip on the hard drive has burned it's no good replacing the chip on the hard drive.

You have to go to an expert and retrieve those files.

I'd just RMA the drive if it's still under warranty. Chances are you'll have to get by without your old files and get a newer better drive. Last time I checked, getting a hard drive professionally repaired was very, very expensive.
