Get home premium, it has all you will ever need! Same goes with Win7, home premium will be the one to have! Win7 Professional will just give minimal extras for the extra cost |

But how can that be be when $800 42" HDTVs are so affordable that even the hobo down the road has one tucked away in his 32" box?

Well to be honest if I upgraded to Ultimate it would be based on the features, and not the cosmetics as you put it..... It's probably exactly the same except with some home business features....oyu know like XP Home vs. XP Pro... At least that's what it says on the Microsoft upgrade sight.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

So you mean to say in effect, that XP PRofessional is merely "cosmetic"???? My Dad has XP Pro....he would love that..... ![]() ![]()

No that's a little different. XP Pro is different. Vista Business is different. Both are meant more for businesses than home users. In the case of XP Professional it was also beneficial to gamers, but in Vista's case Home Premium has everything you need, with Ultimate adding the business features and then one or two cosmetic features. As for Windows 7...well no one knows yet...at least I don't... I assume it's going to be the same as Vista though, with Home Premium being perfect for regular and gamer use, Professional being for business use and then Ultimate combining the the two and adding some cosmetic features.

Windows 7: The planned versions Windows 7 Starter Aimed at netbooks and "emerging markets". Since all versions of windows 7 have been tweaked to run on low-end hardware this is not a version you are likely to deal with. Windows 7 Starter will only be able to run 3 apps at a time ans won't have the new aero interface improvements. Windows 7 Home Basic Home Basic is being released for developing markets only. There won't be a retail version for sale. Windows 7 Home Premium Home Premium will be the default option offered for sale and installed on systems. Unlike Vista Home Premium, this version of windows 7 can handle DVD playback and DivX codecs out of the box. Home premium comes with all the new features we have tested. Windows 7 Professional Professional will ship with all the features of home premium, plus business-focused extras such as remote desktop, presentation mode, data encryption and advanced printing and back-up options Windows 7 Enterprise Enterprise is aimed at bulk business users, so unless you plan to install Windows 7 on a few thousand computers you're unlikely to deal with this version. Essentially the same as windows 7 Professional, Enterprise adds a few business extras, such as the ability to boot from a virtual drive and Bitlocker drive encryption. Windows 7 Ultimate Has all the features of Enterprise, however will actually be available to individual end users. It looks like you won't be able just walk into your local computer shop and buy a copy: rather Ultimate will be offered as an upgrade to the other versions.

Direct X 11 Windows 7 will be used as a launch platform for DirectX 11, bringing even more features to ensure your games look incredible. So far there isn't any GFX hardware that supports DirectX 11, at least until the next gen NVIDIA and ATI cards arrive late 2009. Happily DX11 will be fully backwards compatible with Vista (though why you would still use Vista is a mystery). So far Microsoft has announced three major new features in DirectX 11: tessellation, multi-threading and Compute Shader. Potentially the most important is tessellation. In its simplest sense, tessellation is a process in which game objects and environments are made up of a bunch of triangles. Objects further away having fewer triangles, giving lower detail, while objects up close have more triangles and higher detail. With a dedicated tessellation system, fewer resources are used to create variable detail levels. Tessellation can also eliminate jumps in the quality of distant objects as they get closer, instead smoothly increasing the detail. Multi-threading allows games to take better advantage of multiple CPU cores for handling the requests between the game, API and video hardware. This feature is backwards compatible with older hardware, helping ensure you high end GPU isn't CPU bound. Comput Shader allows programmers direct access to the GPU shader pipeline for general purpose computing. This is similat to CUDA from NVIDIA and CTM from AMD, though will work with either brand of video card. This makes it a lot simpler for programmers to write software to utilise the power of the GPU without being tied to a specific brand. Compute Shader will also mean that all game developers can use GPU for physics calculations no matter what hardware the end user has. |

That's good news for me.....except that If I wanted to go straight to Ultimate I'm S.O.L. You gotta buy a whole new base, then another and and probably eventually another one.... That way you have to get the full package... I liked the Vista approach better... too bad the Beta of 7 expires, our you can't buy it out... ![]() ![]()
