Any way to speed up my connection
I am running on a dial up connection on a 56k analogue connection though I usually only get about 33k. I want to make it go faster mostly for gaming. device manager says I have a SoftV92 Data Fax Modem would getting a better one halp at all and if so what should I go for. also I live in The UK I know that I can't get broadband where I live but I could get ISDN however this costs to much to get installed (£70 IIRC) does anyone if BT offer to make my line digital without giving ISDN and how much that would cost. Also is there any other way for me to increase the speed of my connection
Thanks in advance. |

Yes. The internal modems are crap and half the time won't go at full speed. Get a serial (not USB) external modem. >I live in The UK I know that I can't get broadband where I live but I could get ISDN however this costs to much to get installed (£70 IIRC) does anyone if BT offer to make my line digital without giving ISDN and how much that would cost ISDN sucks. A digital line will only give you a clearer signal from the point that the phone line comes into the house. It will not give you better speed unless you use an ISDN TA. How long is the phone cable to your PC? Does it pass a lot of electronic goods? Secondly, 'upgrading' to a digital line puts ADSL out of the question later. Thirdly: where the hell do you live that you can't get ADSL? I thought BT were making a big effort to get massive ADSL acceptance.

thanks kane.
that modem is actually a PCI modem already though. maybe a crap one though. I didnt know that it makes adsl unavailable thanks for that information it would have been horrible to find out the hard way and BT lied about making a big effort I wont get it here for another 6 months at best probably longer knowing how rubbish they are though :P so would it be worth getting a different PCI modem? edit - forgot to say the phone wire has to go in en extention because I am so far from my jack. it looks like 1 meter wire from modem to extension about 3 meters of extensions lying around on the floor beside my computer and about 3 - 4 meters from there to the jack. so 7-8 meters total with a big coil of wires in there too. no electrical sources nearby except my computer and the jack that I use is right next to the fridge. There is another one but it is near an electric fireplace :/ Last edited by Evil_Neko; February 10th, 2005 at 21:01. |

PCI <> Serial. I mean an external modem which hooks up to your serial port. As the the extension thing: that much extension could be a problem. just being coiled up creates EMF. One other thing: just to check: which companies did you check ADSL avaliability with. BT and NTL don't always serve the same areas: I can't get BB from NTL where I am, but BT provide it.

heh, sorry kane I am slightly drunk atm didnt read that bit properly ![]() OMG I THINK I CAN GET NTL BROADBAND!!!!!! :guitar: according to thier availablility checker anyway but I wont beleive it until I e mail them and get a responce or talk to them on the phone. also do you have to change phone companies to use their broadband and say I went for this deal https://secure.ntlfreedom.com/bundle...nltdLocal.aspx would that include line rental and also it says free modem connection is that meaning free installation or just that they will come to my house and plug in my modem for me. edit - also is it cable or adsl and what is the differance |

CAble/ADSL doesn't really make any difference. Free installation means they come to the house and install all the hardware physicaly. Setting it up on your PC is your own job.

Free installalation would mean to me that they install the cable for free. The only charge would be the monthly fee and perhaps the modem (depends on the provider - that link is not valid)
