Ya i suppose so but it would be pretty crappy I thinks, unless you got some black mark deals or someone with tons of extra old stock.

I think it depends. Do you need a mouse, keyboard, a monitor, speakers and other little things like this? How about a hard drive and a CD ROM? What about the graphics card? Do you have these already and don't need to upgrade?

It just depends on so much what you currently have and need to upgrade. Do you want a complete system?

Your best solution wouldn't be to build but get one of those Dell deals. I've seen entire comps with 2.4 GHz Intel Processor, Windows XP, and CRT Monitor for $300 dollars after rebate.

If you built your computer and bought a legal copy of Windows XP, that alone would run you $150 bucks or so. Add on a mobo and processor that's decent and you're already over your $300 dollar limit.

Clay, you forgot an OS, so unless he wants Linux, it will put him well over $300

If you have a Fry's close, you can do a bit better, for example, this weekend at Fry's:
Sempron 2400 + mobo $75 (onboard video, sound, NIC, USB)
Antec 300watts and case $20 after rebate ($50 -30)
Seagate 160GB $55 after rebate ($105 - 50) -or get it from Newegg
Kingston PC2700 512mb $60 after rebate ($80-20) -or get it from Newegg
CDRW $20 -or get it from Newegg
So you pay $330 + tax - $100 ~ $230
Use Win 98 for games and Linux for others $0
provided you have a Fry's and you are not rebate-phobic,

HSF - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...166-027&depa=0

$6.99

CPU - http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduc...104-201&DEPA=1

$48 and very overclockable.

MOBO - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...pe=Refurbished

$36 refurb, don't be afraid of Newegg's refurbs - they're great.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...220-024&depa=0

$33 X 2.. order two for Dual Channel. Don't be afraid of PDP's name, they are f'ing great, unbeatable for the price. Google some reviews.

Case - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...105-139&depa=1

$30 with $16 s&h

Video Card - http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...pe=Refurbished

TOTAL = $265, and you get a great system that whoops the **** out of your current one.

edit: Oh, and OS.. I don't think anyone BUYS their OS.

Why build one at that price? Canadian $, that's about the best deal I've seen in a while. Adding a monitor to it increases the total cost by almost 2x sometimes, unless you have one already, or find one for cheap. There's always used stuff too.

Uh, you also need a CPU and any expansion cards you want to use.

Plus, Duke lives in the USA.

I'm sure you could find a CPU for under $60 for it, and BTW in US funds, that would be $212 for the box.

Powmax makes great value-oriented cases, so any from them would be good.. just depends on what style and what color lights you want. Plus, that one has a handle on the top for easy transport.

Don't you need to buy a dual set to ensure the two stick are capable of dual channel?
Other than that, couldn't have picked better parts myself.

Duke, check this article out, there is bound to be something in there you like

no dual channel ram are just 2 stick s of normal ram. and the kits are just 2 sticks of ram that been tested to work and should be the same chips and timmings.

Yeah. As long as the two sticks are the same amount, sidedness (double or single, single being better for overclocking), rated spec, dual-channel will work fine on it.

Although kits are technically "inspected" to work with dual channel, if you buy two of the same (or even similar brand, but always same spec, size, and sidedness) stick from a non dual-channel kit, it'll still work fine. I ran one Crucial PC2700 stick with one of these PDP PC4000 sticks in Dual Channel @ 400MHz, worked fine.

if you live in our country, $300 is sufficient to build a custom PC with average-above average performance
