Windows Reset, after unplug from wall outlet?

This is so weird. I unplugged my PC while it was on and left it off for an hour or so. Then I reboot, and Windows is back to it's defaults for everything. All my cookies are gone, my quick launch buttons, some of my desktop shortcuts, all my saved settings and configurations for almost all of my programs! What happened? Now I'm just thinkin of underclocking back to stock and reformatting windows once again, only after 1 month.

Could this be some sort of corruption from unplugging from the wall during Windows operation? I've unplugged it was it was on several times before, mainly to get away with certain things, but this never happened before. Or maybe corruption from a not-as-stable overclock could have been the case?

Any advice and what I should do now is appreciated. Thanks!

make sure you are logged on as your username. let's say, for example, that your username is "john doe" and you always log onto that (via autologon perhaps).

what it may have done is logged you on as "administrator" and given you a different set of everything, a different user. so just switch users to the regular "john doe" one (or wahtever your name is )

this happened to me right when i installed windows 2000, and set my settings up. i rebooted and they were gone!!!! but it turned out i was on admin the second time.

The system may have messed up some how and windows restored the registry from back when it was first installed. It's happened to me before.. overclocking too high or wrongly has always been the case. If so, you should still have all your programs and stuff.

Thanks for the info, anus.

Anyway, I get this error when Windows boots up:

Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.

What the hell? It says my profile is corrupted or is missing and cannot be loaded too. What could have caused this?

Overclocking too high can easily corrupt data.. looks like it corrupted your profile data. Try setting to stock and formatting.. I'll bet it won't happen ever again.

Yup, I rebooted again and same deal. *sigh* I even had my memory set to 3T for the most stability. Oh well, time for a 105MHz FSB and a 2.8ghz speed. Before I format I gotta burn all my crap onto CDs...Again.

I'll set it back to stock speeds when I use Fdisk, wish me luck.

Hmm yeah it looks like it was the overclock yo. Remember I told you I had problems converting my drive to NTFS for XP Pro? Well, going back to stock speeds cured that problem. Things seems to run faster too, hmm, I missed this feeling.

D.D.- Hey, ya live ya learn. I actually just thought I'd run into the occasional reboot and lockup or the like, not my XP Profile going corrupted.

No, you read you learn. Even a newb who read a few tutorials/faq pages would know how to test their system for stability. For your stupidity you paid the price.

If you still want to recover some stuff, you could try one of these.

7 hours is pathetic, i've run 9 hours just to see it fail, you need to really test it. the more you OC the more you need to test it.

cooliscool tested his Tualatin for over 24 hours stable. that's what you need to do

yea, you are supposed to run it for a day, extreme overclockers run it over 48hours.

Yeah, well my dad yelled at me to turn it off since it sounds like a jet engine about to launch. I assumed that 7+ hours would be sufficiente since I wouldn't really stress it that much. Oh well, the format went great, and my Divx encoding is actually going faster now.

I look at it this way. Wouldn't you rather pay for a new Processor and have 2 chips than taking a chance to burn one out and have none at all. 2.7 Ghz isnt slow by any means. Hell it is fast! Though an Intel Celeron isnt the fastest choice.

Your just an overclocking wh0r3!

Indeed RB.

I guess I shouldn't be greedy. Some people are still running P2's as their main machines!
