I guess your just using parallel port...so you gotta get a parallel cable with 2 male end connectors for the parallel port. Connect the notebooks and config your network throught the "network and dial-up" in control panel, if your using windows. -OR- If both notebooks have ethernet ports go get a cat5 cable that surports PC-2-PC only cables, these ones cost a little more than the regular ethernet cables but you don't need a router or hub to connect or config network. -Or- USB-2-USB works to...its the same as the parallel port thing. If i'm a little off subject let me know...

Why do you have to get a serial cable with connectors? Wouldn't getting a male->male parallel cable work? I believe the direct cable connection thingy in Windows 98 supports parallel cables.

Just to clarify, those PC to PC ethernet cables are commonly known as crossover cables
. As for the Win98 program, I don't know how fast it is with parallel cables, when I used it with a serial cable it went at about dialup speed (2.5-3k/sec).

heh, thanks I forgot they were called crossover cables...they come in handy for backing up data and tranfser rate are alot better than parallel or serial.
*my forgetfulness is due to a lack of sleep...slept 2hrs today. so i'm a little off.

Yes they are very fast. At 10Mbps the data rate would be 1.25 megs/sec, at 100Mbps, 12.5 megs/sec and at 1000Mbps, 125 megs/sec. Sure beats any parallel/serial connection
. I think a FireWire connection would also work but both computers might not have the required connectors.

I didnt mention firewire either...had the same feeling that the notebooks didnt have them installed but that would be killer for the transfer rates

Notebooks do have firewire. Well the newer one's do anyway.
Adi, i regularly connect my laptop to my mates laptop and i use a crossover cable. It's probably easier and quicker than a serial cable. They are generally red in colour. Then you just connect to the other person's ip address. |
