hard Drive Problem....

I have an old 20GB Maxtor HDD and for some reason, With WinXP it only shows up as 8Gb when its hooked up to the motherboard and 20GB when its hooked up thur a mass storage Pci card. but when i try to use it for installing big things (like an OS or Game) it Pauses off and on and then it just frezzzzes..but thats not it. When i Try to install Red Hat Linux 9.0 on it it shows up as 20Gb no matter how i hook it up. and it works but very slow..very, takes like 9 hours to install. So, is there anything i can do to fix this problem or should i toss it?

I think it has to do about either your BIOS or the FAT your using... cant remember exactly...When you installe XP, you put your partition in NTFS?

Edit : you can take a look at this website : http://www.pcin.net/help/articles/8gb.php

it shows the drive as a 8GB hard Drive insted of 20GB. i dont have it formated with any filesystem right now or anything and when i try to format it, it locks up. Im trying a program called Maxtor Powermax 4.09 as i type just to see if there are any errors or anything but i still think i will have to replace it.
