networking prob

i have a LAN connecting 1 pc with windows XP to one which has windows ME . both use the internet and the modem is connected to the xp machine.
My problem is that even if the ME computer is switched off the XP can still only use half of the total network bandwidth
Is there a way to fix this ?

you gotta go in your router and config it. but some routers dont have the config on the firmware, i guess try it out.

when you say half can you give an aporoximation of the amount of network bandwidth you are refering to?

ok, maybe i wasn't very clear.
we are too cheap to buy a router ^_^, so we have an adsl modem connected to one computer which then uses microsoft internet connection sharing to share with the other one (the ME).
i will be (hopefully) getting an adsl router soon :>
will this fix the problem ?

I see, but this cost a little more money...call your dsl company and ask for additional ip address. This will give you 2 ip addresses and will send full bandwith to both comps even if both are on or off. Comcast (Cable internet) in the USA allows this for an extra $3 a month...I've done this before for a few months till i bought a router.

Wow, I did read you first reply all wrong, silly me . Sorry about that. You basically have a network like in a daisy link (peer to peer), like the Xp pc has 2 ethernet cards with the ME connected to it. So, you mean when your XP is on and only uses half the bandwith how much is your total bandwith surposed to be if one pc is on? (To let you know DSL doesnt perform as advertised due to distance from supplier. i.e. if your 3miles or more away from the terimnal your bandwith degrades, in your case lower bandwith.) And for the router thing, you'll see better perfomance as a LAN but it wont fix the bandwith that your talking about (i guess the dsl internet).
