Refreshing rates (why to change?)

Why some people changes their refresfing rates from optimal to 60Hz or from 80Hz to 100Hz? What is the main point for changing the rate?

I never knew there was an admin with less than 200 posts

Actuaily it's the rate that a CRT monitor "draws" the image, the higher it is the less eye fatigue you'll have after looking at the screen for long peroids, basicly the higher the better.
What moomoomoo was talking about sounds like speedhacks not refreash rates
By the way moomoomoo does your other nick happen to be mooman?

Like I said refreash rates don't affect game speed and frame rates, that admin didn't seem to know what it is,it just changes the rate your monitor "draws" the pixles on screen set it to the highest your monitor will support

I know it has to be above 60Hz if you want to use stereo vision..... Has support for that been discontinued? I thought stereo vision was the coolest thing ever for games that it worked well with. Now the new drivers dont even create a tab for it.

It does if your turn on vertical sync, otherwise refresh rate will not affect fps.

But generally you want the refresh rate to be at least 85Hz (for me anyways), lower than that I get headache after an one hour or two.

i cant stand 60....70 is the bare minimum but even that's bad. 85 or 100 or even 120 is preferred

I notice some minor flickering at 75 hz as well, but I don't think my monitor will go higher than that at 1024x768 .

Edit: Just checked it, my monitor does hit 85 hz in 1024x768. The small amounts of flickering that were present at 75 hz is gone now, however, everything seems slightly fuzzier. I think I'll stick to 75 hz for now.

Well I have a lower end monitor (17 inch Digiview) that I got about 3-4 years ago. Everything looks really sharp at 75 hz though.

I used to have things at 65 on my old one and now that I have my new one at 85 I see absolutely no difference. Maybe I'm just lucky.

I noticed the flickering too on my old tiny 15-inch monitor when I was on the computer for a long time. Now I've gotten so used to 85hz on my 19-inch monitor that I can't stand 60hz anymore. I can stand 75hz if I want to play a game on 1600x1200 resolution. My monitor doesn't support 85hz at 1600x1200.

I couldn't see monitors flickering at 60 before too... try increasing to 75 or higher, then back to 60 and you will be able to see it
