DVD player question

I've been thinking of getting myself an actual dvd player, since the ps2 is horrid at playing dvds, and is void of any other features. I have a pretty good idea on what i want, but i have one question about a player: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....oryId=cat03013

It claims it plays divx, which is all fine and dandy, but everything good these days comes out on xvid. What i want to know, since they're both mpeg layer 4, will xvid run on it as well? If not, is there any way to make it run? A friend directed me towards this program in case it doesn't run xvid files. But would that work? I'd think you'd actually need to fully reencode the file in order for it to be successfully decoded by divx codecs.

thanks for any help possable

dont even bother would be my advice. dvd players that play divx or xvid are a pain in the backside and rearly work correctly. my advice? buy a modded xbox. it may cost more, but it'll play everything you can throw at it.

I know what a modded xbox can do. I'm not interested. if i had the money for a better player, i would have gotten one, there's ones that can do a sh!tload more than this one.

>>since the ps2 is horrid at playing dvds

Uh not really. DVD's play fine. At least on mine and the one my sister has. If you mean variety like vcd's etc ... than okay ...

I recommend the Koss KS3123-2 it is 50 dollars and can play everything you throw at it. dvd-+r/rw, vcd, xvcd, svcd, xsvcd, mp3, wma, picture cd, cdr/rw ... blah blah blah ...

It's the one I have and works great.

It is like a modified VCD and SCD. It is the same format only higher resolutions and bit rates. Very few dvd players can play them tho!

You might want to look at Lite-on DVD players...

whatever then. go buy a kiss divx player ore whatever you want. just don't come here complaining about it when it doesnt work. there is no dvd player that can play divx or xvid files without problems.

After everything i've heard about them from actuall users, i'd never touch one, and that is one of the reasons for my modded xbox. Its better than a divx player in every way.

well, i hate the player's interface, like how going into the menu pauses the movie. and my terminator 2 movie is all distorted in it while it works on a friend's dvd player. I've been spoiled with the xbox, that has a great dvd player built in it.

and thanks for the tips guys, i'll consider them. I think i'm going to stay within best buy for shopping though, i have a gift certificate and a 100 dollar product i have to return there, one stop shopping is easier :P. I dont think best buy carriest the ks3123-2 or those lite on dvd players. I'll just ask an employee when i go shopping and hopefully i'll get straight answers.

the ps2 is a terrible dvd player. Let's get this straight - it plays dvd's fine, but the picture is crap. Blacks are washed out, poor definition and very bad noise. You go and buy a £30 toshiba dvd player and it'll wipe the floor with the ps2.

IMO, The PS2 is old compared to the X-box and GC...
It's slated as a "game" machine, not a "home entertainment" one..

A modded X-box seems to be a nice solution. but for it's price(here), i'd rather make myself a HTPC (or a DVD+ player)...

an xbox and a mod chip runs for about 220-230 bucks, too much money i'm willing to spend on a media player. Besides, i just recently sold my previous xbox, and for good reason, there's nothing more worth playing that i haven't already played, and only a couple of games coming out in the future, so if i did do that, it would be for media purposes only, and to me would be a waste.
