i dont know why but my pc feels slow here is my spec
120gb matrox hard drive, nvidia geforce fx 5900 ultra, pentuim 4 2.6ghz 533fsb, 1gb ram, k my processor should be fine ill give you an example of why it feels slow my hard drive makes noies lol and you know half life well someone on a slower pc can load the next level in half life in millerseconds but it takes me 1 or 3 that sound pety but it still anoying well anyway hope yah can help!!

Check your pagefile size, too. Windows likes to use the pagefile before actual system memory.

but they dont affect loading time do they, Ive got AVG, Firewall,msn, yahoo mesenger. trillian and many more

MSN Messenger has been natorious for slowing down some PCs grately. Disable that first..

HOw much stuff fo you have on your harddrive ?
And when do you feel "slowness" ??? In games or just opening/closing programs ?
Anyway best way to increase performance is to overclock so you should look into it perhaps!

i cant overclock my proccesor its locked and you know loading between levels in half life etc and loading in genral

Anyways, ahem, you might have a problem with a misbehaving driver/program. If you have Win XP/2000, press ctrl-alt-del once and wait for the task manager to pop up. Click processes and see if any program/device is take up CPU resources or huge amounts of memory. It might clue you in on the misbehaving program.

You have 1GB RAM? Disable your swap file.

Winkey + Pause/Break --> Advanced tab --> Settings (under Performance) --> Advanced tab --> Change (under Virtual Memory) --> No Paging File --> Set.

Then hit OK and restart your PC.

Disable every thing that you won't us ewhile you're playing (maybe leave on AVG and fire wall if you are in multiplayer games), You can use SpeedUp from Aldo Tools to free memory and kill th process you don't need. It take some time know waht to kill and what not, but after it you'll see the difference

Could be a hardware issue. I used to have a network card which would add an extra 30 seconds onto startup time. I sure was surprised how much faster everything would load when I took it out and started using the onboard mobo LAN port.

"system idle process" you must mean. That's good, that's where you want your cpu resources to go. It's a small thread that lowers the activity on your cpu during periods of nonuse, thus lowering the cpu temp.

Must be a hard drive/hdd interface problem.

Paging file == Virtual Memory. I barley use it on my 512 MB system. You will probably never need it on yours.
