Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
ok , well after searching for who knows how long, i have finally found a thermaltake volcano 9 hsf here and it looks really good on paper. what i really need to know, is do i have to buy any of that thermal stuff for the bottom of it? or is that the thermal tape and the heatsink compound? and how exactly do you apply it, and what amount of it do you use? my current hsf has it pre-applied, so i've never done that before.

If your just looking for thermal grease i would buy a brand named "Arctic Silver" which you can buy at www.newegg.com. To apply it just cover the small area of your cpu core with it. Not to thick just enough so that it is covered. Then just place your heatsink on.

Umm, Stay away from the volcano 9......
The best TT HSF out there is the "Silent Boost" (Thermalright copy!).... You'd get a better deal getting a SLK-800 or SK-7...

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
Whick you can also buy at newegg although it is a bit more expensive and doesnt come with a fan so you have to buy a fan too. Atleast i dont think it comes with a fan. Correct me anyone if i am wrong.

the volcano 9 sucks
don't get it. get the vantec aeroflow instead. or the thermaltake silent boost.

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
ok,well i cant order from newegg so thats out of the question. zerocopy, what cpu do you have and what temp does it run at? i know there are more choices out there than the volcano 9, but it look to me like the best one out of tigerdirect's range of choices. i cant look at a different site cause this is the only one im allowed to order from (lol). also neither the vantec aeroflow or the thermaltake silent boost are on tigerdirect's site

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
Dont go for an 11+ either. I would reccomend the aero7+ right now or the slk-800.
Also check into this baby. I hear it is an awesome hs. http://www.swiftnets.com/products/mcx462-V.asp

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
Just curious, although none of my business. Why won't you order form newegg. I have ordered form both newegg and tiger. Newegg has been the best hands down. Cant beat their prices or customer service. Tiger i have had lots of probems with.
I guess i just wanted to pass on some advice but there may be other factors why you cant order from them. O, by the way, this one if you insist on buying from tiger is a better thermaltake http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...&sku=T925-1040

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
You want nice air cooling go with Thermalright.
My HSF keeps my CPU like 12C cooler than stock cooling. Of course the Fan I have for it is insane... but for air cooling usually the way it is "The louder the better cooling". I have the P4 version but there is an AMD version. Of course I don't think these HS/F combo is the cheapest but it sure is the best or one of the best air cooling solutions for sure. check this baby out http://www.pcabusers.com/reviews/the...lk900a/p1.html And check these fans out http://www.coolerexpress.com/vantorfan80c.html BTW the fans are loud indeed. check the noise ratings. And check the CFM. That is how much air they blow. But believe me they sure do cool. Last edited by saulin; September 26th, 2003 at 05:26. |

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
i had a volcano 9, it's loud and doesn't cool as well as an aeroflow. i used to have temps of 48, but then i changed the fan and i now have temps of 37-41, depends on what i'm doing.

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
@ reichfurher: excuse my language, but daym thats one huge ass hsf. too bad tigerdirect doesnt have it. keep in mind that is the only place im allowed to order from (cause of my mom) what exactly is so bad about the volcano 9? it has twice the airflow of my current hsf at the same noise level and the rpms can be adjusted.

The new Swiftech?
I heard you could use a low airflow panny and still get good temps(below 40 or something)...

unlike the volcano 9... loud... costs $30.... temps go above 50 during summers... <40 during winters.

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
well you do have the same proc as me, but i think the volcano 9 will keep mine cooler than my current hsf (a speeze pos) right now my temp stays at 53 with the panel off, +60 with the panel on. the vantec aeroflow also is only a fan, so where would i find a heatsink for it, or could i just use this speeze one and drop the fan? also keep in mind tigerdirect does not have any of the hsfs mentioned by others above. basically, i feel that my current hsf is just plain crap compared to the volcano 9.

This is the revised SLK-900 http://www.svc.com/thslsoco.html
This one looks kick ass, too bad it's for P4 only right now. http://www.svc.com/thsphehe.html

Re: Lookin at new hsf, need some info on it
i'd like to put in a good word for the slk-800/900. These babies are trully marvellous.
BTW, on the thermal compound discussion- don't take thermal compound lightly. Even amoung high performance compounds, there are big (1-2 degrees celcius) differences. Someone above recommended AS3 - i'd say go Arctice Ceramique cuz its been proven to be better (and IIRc cheaper in a lot of places)
