A New Competitor to ATI and Nvidia maybe?

Dunno looks good. Possibility of Duo 8 Pipeline architectures could be pretty killer. And Also could be pretty hefty on the ole paycheck too. Have a looky at the lineup the new company XGI is preparing.

And these cards arent years off or vaporware. Many expect them in the coming 4 months.

SLI mode is hardly a 3dfx rip off. ATI has done. Nvidia cards support it. And it's hardly ripping nVidia off. If they can do it cost effectively I'd be interested.

Looks nice.

-16 sets high performance pixel rendering pipelines

It's got 2 GPU's on 1 card. Would that work the same way as dual processors? As it it won't help most programs unless it's programmed for 2. The cost would be rediculous too.

Re: A New Competitor to ATI and Nvidia maybe?

I would like to see a Tile Based Rendering Engine like the KyroII's but with higher ddr/core speeds and be dx9/ps2 OGL1.5/2.0 compatible. I hear the PowerVR Series 5 may also be a contender soon. PowerVr technology is used in the Dreamcast and the Naomi2 arcade hardware.

Re: A New Competitor to ATI and Nvidia maybe?

yahman!!! fivefeet- I too have marvelled at tile-based rendering . When I first heard of it, I was so amazed by the concept. In fact, that was why I bought a dreamcast . Too bad the kyro cards were slow and lacked support...

BTW, the disadvantage of tile-based rendering : it would sorta "cheat" 3d mark cuz 03 is drawn from the back of the scene (IIRC).

Re: A New Competitor to ATI and Nvidia maybe?

well, STMicro sold their stake in powervr, so imagination technologies (the developers of powervr) will need to find another company to help fund the next iteration of powervr...

there's only 3 powervr btw (pcx/pcx2, series 2, kyro/kyroII <-second one was simply clocked higher).

And GSDragoon, games don't need to be written to take advantage of it, only the drivers do (or 3dfx Voodoo5 and ATi's Maxx derivatives would've been useless).

Re: A New Competitor to ATI and Nvidia maybe?

That's what they said about ATi when 3dfx and Nvidia was battling it out. Look it the situation now. More competition = more options, less prices, and better hardware.

These will be interesting to see. For now im going to stick with ATi since nvidia ****ed me over with their chipset in terms of sound.

Oops.. Done. Hope is was helpful.

The sound issues are there in Nforce2 mobos, but I've only experienced sound problems with MGS2PC. All other apps work fine. Luckily, I also have a SB audigy gamer as a secondary sound card which works fine that game.

The Voodoo 5 made good use of twin GPUs.

Yes, IIRC they suck quite badly. The raw performance in PC gmaes is fine, but anything specialised like emus tend to run badly with poor quality.
OT, Is there PCI versions of the Kyro cards?
I believe so, yes.
