Voodoo 5 5500 PCI: emulation monster, THE best AA for a PCI vid card ( IMO )

Geforce FX 5200 PCI or a Geforce 4 TI4### PCI: pretty good, fast speeds.

or a ATI Radeon 9000 or later PCI ( if they make em' ): Fast, cool, and some can give your case more bling-bling when you have just a puny window and a dim cathode tube

www.ebay.com for a Voodoo 5
www.tigerdirect.com
www.newegg.com
www.pricewatch.com
www.nvidia.com
www.ati.com
for everything else listed

Re: PCI video cards?

ok, thanks for the links.
i narrowed down the selection to two cards...
http://www.pny.com/products/verto/ge...mx440sepci.asp
-OR-
http://mirror.ati.com/products/radeo...wve/index.html

id like some opinions. im leaning towards the geforce, because atm i really have no interest in most of the all in wonder features, but im still not sure. the difference in price is 8 dollars, so both have a chance.

Actually the Radeon 7500 was a pretty decent card (it was the Radeon 7200/7000 cards that were bad). It's a slightly modified (or renamed?) version of the original Radeon, the Radeon 256 (R100). It's pretty much equal in performance to the GeForce 4 MX 440 and Radeon 9000.

The AIW Radeon 7500 is a bit slower than the regular but a GeForce 4 MX 440-SE is also slower than the regular so they should be an even match for each other. Personally I would go for the AIW for its extra features (TV, video capture, etc.) but the MX is not a bad choice either.

Re: PCI video cards?

I'd say V5 5500 if you want to play emulations. BTW, nice info for Radeon AIW PCI, I never seen that before

i got a V5 5500 AGP because:"

I had AGP
I play mostly emulators, but the thing is a KILLER for DX7 and DX8.0 games
The PCI version is just as fast as the AGP version. Get the 7500 AIW, i say now. Or a V5 PCI. Or both! Emulation ( V5 ) and games ( 7500 AIW )

Re: PCI video cards?

Nah, I will stick with Voodoo 5 5500 PCI and AIW 9800 Pro for the AGP [gaming]

Re: PCI video cards?

I had a gforce 4 mx 420 pci (64 mb) and it worked great. It raised my fps a little (the card was bottlenecked by my cpu/mboard) and the image quality was MUCH better than my gfx chipset. If you want a pci card like that, get a mx 440 or mx 460 (?) as they are more powerful. I can get a brand new gf4 mx 420 on newegg for $59 but for some reason that card doesn't have a fan on the heatsink (mine did) and is smaller than my gf4 (both my card and the one on newegg are pny verto cards). I threw the card in my friend's comp and it can hit 100 fps in counter-strike no prob and the lowest we got it was 55 fps with several smoke grenades puffing out smoke at once. On my comp I got 598 3dmarks in 3dmark2001 and on my friend's comp he got about 2100 (he has a 933 mhz p3). You could also get a gforce fx 5200 pci or a radeon 9000/9100/9200 pci.

Re: PCI video cards?

We are a non AGP Mobo as well....we have been enjoying our Geforce FX 5200 128Mb PCI for quite some time now.....It has not disapointed us yet in terms of emulation

Re: PCI video cards?

I'd suggest Radeon 7000 or 7500 by ATI. (and yes, they do have an All-in-Wonder for PCI slots). I am sure any Geforce 4 MX will due to. While these all may be "low end" suggests by todays standards, these are all quite good for most all gaming, and going beyond these cards is merely an option, not a requirement.

In Addition, I'd recommend against Geforce FX cards. While they are good gaming cards, the price vs performance ratio means you may pay a lot for very little, in relation to some of the other cards. Some early FX cards were also very unreliable, but that shouldn't be an issue at this point.

i have a Geforce FX 5200 PCI. It works pretty good and has excellent driver support. But IMHO i think you should be budgeting for a new pc like i am

Hey, you have a 2.0ghz processor (even if it is a Celeron), 256 meg ram, and a 40 GB hard drive. Unless it's choking, or you have a specific planned NEED for upgrading (like video encoding or something), then your system is fine. The average new PC is still exactly the same specs as your current one.
