Question random shutdowns

my brothers comp continues to be an incessant pain in the a. now it shuts down ramdomly, and i have no idea whats causing it. its not windows, since it has happened before it hit post. its not overheating, it stays at 40-50 C and can shutdown irregardless of the temp. if anyone can help i'd appreciate it. its a Duron @ 1.3 with 256 MB ram, 20 GB hd and a GeForce 4 MX 420. i built the system last March.

Re: random shutdowns

possible problems

-power supply noy supplying enough power
-ram issue
-IRQ's on the mobo are conflicting. may need a bios update...

Re: random shutdowns

i've probably reinstalled windows 6 or 7 times since i built it in march. it isnt windows cause it does it out of windows as well. the mobo is a Shuttle AK38N and it has a 350 Watt psu. ram could be the problem, i'll look into that. i'll also see if any irqs are conflicting. thanks for the suggestions.

I think that it's most posibly the memory. To rule this out go and download Memtest86 @ http://www.memtest86.com and run it on your bro's PC, and see if you get any errors, if you do, you'll have to replace the memory.

Re: random shutdowns

The Blaster worm was discovered yesterday. It uses a recently found RPC/DCOM exploit. Security experts made a warning on the 8th that it was very likely that a new worm would be released.

Re: random shutdowns

actually, the blaster worm screwed up xp so bad on mine i did have to reformat. anyway the comp seems to run fine as long as it is sitting on its side. if it sits upright though, it still happens. also, i chose a shuttle mobo cause i didnt feel like paying double for other brands whose only advantage was overclocking. (at that time, sata and agp 8x werent out)

Re: random shutdowns

if it started like 4 days ago....or between then and now i bet anything its blaster worm...go to www.microsoft.com and the big image with a lock on it leads to a patch...THEN YOU NEED AV SOFTWARE TO GET IT OFF OF YOU!!!!!!!!!
