Overclocking

My CPU is slow, too damn slow for many of the PSX games I use anyway. I'm getting mighty sick of it. So, I was wondering if anyone has advice on how to overclock my CPU (P3 500) and GPU (Voodoo3 3000). And on any precautions (what I should worry about, how clocked is OVERclocked, etc.)

thanks

Re: Overclocking

wow, someone else with a voodoo 3 3000. if you are overclocking that beast, i would stick a 80mm fan on top or the heatsink to cool it.

Re: Overclocking

Hi there mate... I'we been overclocking for quite some time now... Thing is to be honest you wouldn't notice much improvement after you have o/c your rig
THere are many things that matter, voltages, heat, memory, motherboard and so on. But try to find jumpers on your board. You will be able to change buss speed only and that will take your PCI buss out of spec and so on.
But your card you should be able to o/c. Try program called Powerstrip. I never used it but I recon that it should be able to o/c your card. Just o/c Core and Memory 5 MHz at a time and try if you see any artifacts.. If you see any back of some 5-10 MHz and you are set... Less heat = more o/c!
Good Luck !

Re: Overclocking

haha, I guess it was a little more complex than I thought. But, I don't really think there's a way to o/c it enough to see improvement. So, I'll stick with what I got.

It would be a nice excuse to get a new porcessor though. "yeah, I overclocked my chip and fried it, so I need a new one."

Re: Overclocking

well, if i understand this stuff correctly, depending on which processor, youll need a new motherboard.
and also, would more RAM help?

Re: Overclocking

No idea on how much RAM mate got in his rig. And thing is that you never have too much RAM but he would notice only improvements in loading times if that
Overclocking such old systems don't yield so much in return.
The other day I overclocked my sisters PIII 733 to 825 ( Motehrboard don't support more overclocking )
It works great but I can't notice any improvement at all! Some benchmarks only ( Sandra eg )

But mate your rig is veeeery old, you should get yourself a new one...

Thank you for your time!

Re: Overclocking

What!? really?

that's nothing . . . you should see what I had BEFORE:

ATi Rage 128 (now a Voodoo3 3000)
64MB RAM (now 192MB)
some crappy onboard sound processor (now a Soundblaster 128)
13Gig 2MB HDD (now a 80Gig 8MB Western Digital)

Next: AMD Athlon XP 2100, 256MB DDR RAM, and a motherboard that supports such hardware. Then I'ma gettin' a Voodoo5 6000 . . . somewhere . . .

Voodoo5 6000 equals mega bucks. Also I believe that you will only be able to find one on E-Bay and then if only you're lucky. Not many of these were produced, before 3fx was bought out by Nvidia. Your best bet would be a Voodoo5 5000, several people on the boards (fivefeet8 for one) have them and like them very much. They could probably help you find one as well. Me, I'll stick w/my GF FX 5900 Ultra.
Hope this info helps and if you do decide to go for a Voodoo5 6000, best of luck.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

Re: Overclocking

Wasnt there a voodoo6 6000 in the making? I remember signing up to win such card and have it delivered to my door via Lara Croft.

As for voodoo5's, you can find plenty of them on ebay.

Re: Overclocking

Well Voodoos are old and only good for playing emulator games AFAIK.
If you are short on money go for GF3 or Radeon 8500 LE or something in that manner. So you can play some PC games as well =)
Good Luck mate!

Re: Overclocking

Trust me man, I'm not a PC gamer. Though Final Fantasy XI and Full Throttle II do sound quite nice (FFXI considering we finally get a broadband connection 'round here.)

But the main reason I want a Voodoo is not only for performance, but compatibility as well. I NEVER had any trouble with my Voodoo before, and don't get me started on my ATi Rage 128. What a hassle that thing was.

Nah, ATI's really improved their drivers now.
Last time I saw a Voodoo6000 it went for US$5k I think...
No matter, you definately need more RAM than 256 to comfortably use WinXP. 512 is almost the minimum anyone should have, whats more RAM is ridiculously cheap these days.

Re: Overclocking

Fivefreakinthousand!!? I'll get a Voodoo5 5000 instead then. I could've gotten a 6000 at Future shop for like $200 Canadian. But I only got a 2x AGP slot, that was a 4x.

Re: Overclocking

Voodoos aren't driver supported AFAIK except for fan made drivers and they are very, very old. On the other hand Nvidia and ATi are fighting all over the place releasing kick a$$ drivers. But it is your call. Sooner or later you'll update that rig of yours and Voodoo won't do you much good then.
( I presume that you don't update your hardware much and that you would get either GF3 or Radeon 8500 )
Anyway what is it that you play the most ? And what OS are you using too ?

Re: Overclocking

sxamiga, I tought you are wrong, instead V5 5000 and 5500 . Fivefeet8 have 5500, and I believe you're the same, not 5000.

Hanamichi, the one I've seen in eBay not go that high actually. It "just" go to $599 anyway.

V5 6000 : The one [and also some of them] that sold in eBay are only small production. It was never retailed release. When its in pre-order, I was preorder it from chipsbits.com, but then they canceled it because it's never released .

You just put it in. The card will be limited to 2x, but they are designed to be backwards compatible.
