Is 2.2GHZ good speed today??
First and foremost my computer specs:
AMD 800MHZ Soundblaster LIVE 512 SD RAM Geforce2MX400 32MB 50X CDROM Floppy drive I've decided to change the cpu to 2.2GHZ and maybe and mainboard as well. I found out its only 150-160$$ in my area. The 2.5 to 3.2 GHZ cpus seems too much so I'm wondering if this is a useful upgrade? I'm using it mainly for Epsxe, N64, WarcraftIII, and C&C generals(this one seems to lag no matter what your computer specs are while everything else runs fine.....). Also I don't wan't any major upgrades until later. your opinion?? |

Re: Is 2.2GHZ good speed today??
Maybe you should consider a new gfx card too?
GF2MX is pretty slow on todays standard.

Oh BTW currently my computer is really loud. I was wondering what kinda athlon XP cpu fan would you recommend thats quiet and economic wise. Does the power supply play a BIG part in noise as well??
I'm concerned about the high level of noise because when my computer is on, the only thing that is louder than my computer is either the waching machine, vacumm cleaner and the car......... |

Re: Is 2.2GHZ good speed today??
Most people reccomend at least 350 watts.

2.2 is a fine speed for a CPU. It should run everything w/ease. If you have 512 megs of SD ram right now, you might want to consider upgrading to 512 megs of DDR ram. That, plus your new processor should really make a difference.
Chris Ray is right, 230 Watts should be sufficent but most CPU makers and mother board makers reccomend as big a PSU as you can, just to be safe. sincerely, sx/amiga |

before it dead ... an XP1600 as the processor. I however recommended at least 350W, since newer computers are hunger of power . Don't try my spec at home ... I don't want to get scolled by your mother .

Re: Is 2.2GHZ good speed today??
My friend has an Antec 350watt true blue PS. It works fine with his 2800+, 9700 pro, 8 fans, 3 cold cathodes, 3 other led lights, 2 HDD, burner DVD rom and a floppy.
I think it all depends on the quality of the PS.

Re: Is 2.2GHZ good speed today??
The power supply that I am getting is an antec truepower 430w. It costs $80 US. I figure that having a little more power than needed is better than not having enough, and if you ever decide to upgrade (more cdrom/dvdrom/burners, more hd's, faster processor and video card, more fans, etc.) you won't have to worry about not having enough power. I would say that anywhere in the range of 300-400w should be fine (350w probably would be the best for you).

good choice. i too am getting that ps. kinda sad how 400w is now the recommended minimum for power systems. my 350w isn't gonna last longer as i am going to put more harddrives and a cathode in my machine. well, last week i was sure that i was going to get an antec truepower 430w, then i saw that thermaltake purepower 480w costs the exact same amount as a 430w. but yesterday, i saw anandtech's review of antec, vantec, thermaltake, and enermax ps. http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.html?i=1841 i'm definately going for antec now.
