GeForce2 OverClocking...

I own a GeForce2 MX400 SDR and I was trying to OC with RivaTuner. I couldnīt go up from 225mhz and 70mhz Memory. And I get only 40 points more in 3DMark2001, so what should I do. Games run a little bit faster... but is a risk to oc a video card??? temperature goes up overclocking??? thx

Re: GeForce2 OverClocking...

Of course there's a risk, you could damage the card if you push it too far on stock cooling and it overheats. I'm not an expert overclocker here but i'd say you can't OC that card very far or far enough to make any kind of real diff in 3dmark or games.

Actuaily you can, just make sure the heatsink on the card can take that heat as well as you are ready to take careful steps and not do it in one go

Re: GeForce2 OverClocking...

Forget about overclocking the core, just focus on the memory. The GeForce 2 cards are bottlenecked by their memory so make that the focus of your overclocking efforts.

When overclocking go no more than 10 Mhz at a time (preferrably 5) and watch for any artifacts. Memory overclocking may produce snow (small, random, white dots) or texture corruption and if you encounter any of these then immediately desist and go back a few Mhz.

Re: GeForce2 OverClocking...

Thru overclocking my radeon I got about 550 points higher in 3dmark2001se. I found going step by step then running a session of 3dmark would help find out the best clock settings. Gradually I went up and up and hit the limit in my sig, any higher and artifacts would show in games. Now when I go from stock to the overclock artifacts appear in windows right away, but go away once the card has time to warm up. Of course always take you're overclock off when you dont need it.

edit: i also added cooling of my own. I made ramsinks out of an old pentium hs, then took the fan off of it and super glued it to my radeon hs.

Re: GeForce2 OverClocking...

Much better. I couldnt take it over 10mhz on the memory before artifacts would show up. The heatsink got really hot on normal rates, now you cant even feel the warmth.

Re: GeForce2 OverClocking...

Sounds like a fun project. I have some OLD comp parts laying around. I know there are some heatsinks. BTW, did you just break them, or did you have to cut it?

Re: GeForce2 OverClocking...

I used a sawzawll to cut them. To adhere them I used a drop of super glue in the cornors of the memory then put AS3 all over the remaining part of the memory. Then stuck the hs on.

Re: GeForce2 OverClocking...

Try not to put the glue on the center of the chip
