Angry Video capture probs (beware the rant)

Hello all... well, I'm going to break my profile here and start with a rant (don't die of shock here! )

OK, here's the story. I just got a new job recently, got an apartment and decided that my entertainment center was going to consist of... my desktop computer (move the chair out of the way and it works great). I've got a good surround system right off, good audio equipment in machine (AC 5.1), a 21" screen and a second, much smaller, 13" second CRT on its right (dual-monitor system). I've got a GeForce 4 with Video-In/Video-Out, which is hooked directly into my cable box via S-Video, so theoretically it will show on my monitor(s). I had near-future plans (within the next month or so) to purchase a 50" plasma TV to replace my 13" as a secondary monitor and hang it above my 21" CRT. Now here's the gibe:

The Video-in/Video-out feature of the GeForce 4 (at least the one I have) does not function! Here's what happens: I run Windows XP, and recently installed it. Got the card working (including TV), then ran windows update and got SP 1 up and running (in other words, XP isn't pirated). Guess what SP1 does? IT KNOCKS OUT THE DRIVERS FOR THE FRIGGIN VIDEO-IN/VIDEO-OUT PORTION OF MY CARD! The manufacturers state that they are aware of the problem and suggest I remove SP1 because they have no intention of fixing the problem . I say, well, OK, I'm not screwed yet... I install Win98 and dual-boot. Guess what? It locks up under Win98! So just what OS is this thing supposed to run under?! :cuss2:

Anyways, I see a couple of solutions... I could upgrade my video card, which actually isn't much of a problem now that I'm employed , or I can install a video-capture board (so I don't have to find video cards that support that feature for every upgrade). The only problem with this is that I only have one PCI slot left... and I wanted to install a good IDE or SCSI card (haven't decided yet) so I can use more drives (can you say big-ass digital VCR?)... Anyways, that's the end of my rant.

Re: Video capture probs (beware the rant)

That really sucks - Service Pak 1 is really neccassery for Windows XP - it fixes a whole lot of stuff, so going without it isn't an option.

I would upgrade the video card personally - but it is up to you. A capture card might be expensive enough to just warrant getting a new card.
