Just tested Philips DVD+RW capabilities

Just got it today (well actually my dad bought it ) and I must say itīs quite neat. It plays al cd/dvd formats (except for DVD-RAM) and also play copied DVD's
(tested this by burning a copy of Batman & Robin with my Pioneer DVD-RW A04)
It can store up to 240 min on a disc , and recording quality loses very little IMO. And thanks to my TV/out connection (connected to the īCAMīchannel) I can easily record my gaming sessions , any media from my hd (as well as TV).
I could also try copying a DVD (Iīm using my original Matrix DVD for it) , suddenly starts thinking of the size ; DVD Size = 7,7 GB , this could never fit on it right ?

............. Now starts thinking and realises that youīre recording an output signal and that the size of the output doesnīt actually matter because all is time related.

Well then here goes my first attempt .......... copying directly doesnīt seem to work. The recorder gives the protected image in the up-right corner.
Rip it to HD first !!!
............. about 30 min later ..............

Now how to approach this ; why not let PowerDVD use DVD on HDD mode , seems to work but Subtitles display kind of shaking.
No , that wont do .

Searches internet for better Software DVD Player ............... about 10 min later spotted Intervideo WinDVD Platinum trial edtiton and tries again.

Hmmm the video output doesnīt look that good , but subtitles are fine , .............. letīs thinker a little with the video configuration.

no ......... not good at all , damn this is harder then I thought it would be.

Hey that looks good now , letīs try recording it once more ...... Succes !!!

Well DVD Copying just got a whole lot easier , canīt copy the menus yet but their will be a way soon , I guess.

The reason I didn't elaborate on how to rip the DVD and thinkering with the video config is because it's actually illegal , and I did this only for testing purposes.
If any of the Mods/Admins find this thread to be to illegal to exist on this forum then they may delete whenever they feel like it.
And be aware that I don't condole piracy in any way , what so ever.

Achiveal purposes are OK. Anyways there are a couple of dvd backup program available on the market. I'm using dvdXcopy on my phillips dvd+rw. It copies them perfectly, with the menus, subtitles, etc all intact (takes about an hour or two). The only downside is that it may have to split the disk on two recordables it fit everything in.

What is the model of your philips dvd writer dude? the easiest way to backup your movie to your dvd writer is to use a dvd player w/c is manufactured in china as macrovision is usually disabled in their player, but you will not be able to save the menu.
we favor dvd player from this company Tatung, Dual, Beac these are cheapo players cost around 100 to 150 USD but are really good, the tatung player has a vga out so you can connect it directly to your pc monitor and Beac/Dual even has a built in ntsc=>pal / pal=>ntsc converter built in, very handy.

How long would these 'cheap' DVD-RW's last before they break down? Cause my bro has a DVD-ROM from an unknown company (at least to me ), and now it can't read DVD's....everything else except DVD's.....me, personally, if I was going to get a DVD-RW, i'd pay for one from a company I know and trust....like PIONEER! I have a the 'Pioneer DVD 106S' model for a little over a year now! And it still works like the first day I got it!

were talking here about stand alone dvd player and not pc dvd rom.

i had these cheap dvd players for more than a year now with no problem.

yeah pioneer is a good brand but almost all their players are macrovision enabled, unless you chip them and these cheap players cost almost trice as cheap compared to the pioneer

Well, Iran, my Dad has a Pioneer DVD-Player in our Living Room, and he has a 'Black Box'....a macrovision remover, and he got it as a present! And I have a DVD-Drive from Pioneer, which has been converted to RPC-1, and I use Remote Selector to remove the macrovision if I connect via TV-Out with my Radeon 64 MB V.I.V.O..

But whatever works well for you......and besides, I don't have access to these 'cheap' DVD-Players.....and the ones i've encountered were macrovision-enabled.
