Question fans

quetion: whats a good fan and whats not...
sites doesn't show any info about sound..... so how do you know if its loud or not?
which company/ies do you recommend?

reason: the fan that came with my athlon's loud..... and i want a better fan for my radeon..... so i can o/c it......

um.... to athlonxp 2100 users... does your fan create a lot of sound?? kinda uh..... not sure if its that fan or my power supply one... or that other fan, beside my processor... or.... my video card one, which i doubt

Water cooling? I've read it on magazines, but isn't that is too dangerous even too expensive just for a cooling devices? image the water pipe was broken, what will happen to the computer?

Water cooling is safe as long as its all sealed properlly, its just a closed pump system so as long as theres no leaks then what can go wrong.
As for cost I have been looking into it myself and its not that expensive as long as you dont buy the pre made kits (which are crap anyway)
I worked out it can be quite cheap as all you need is -
Pump
Radiator
120mm Fan
small water tank
Tubing/fittings
and finally a cpu block (most expensive part)
Most of the above can be got cheap from hardware stores etc or you can find them 2nd hand (fish tank pump, car heater core for the radiator, marine electrical box for water tank etc if your lucky you might like me have acsess to a cnc machine to make the cpu block)
Theres the risk you will fry your system if it goes wrong but the water used isnt normal and is not conductive like tap water so a leak doesnt have to be fatal.
Im still considering doing a water cool system so Im not an expert or anything so some of the above may be slightlly wrong but thats the general idea..

As for quiet fans try makes like Papst as they make very quiet fans with decent performance and use the biggest size fan that you can fit on your heatsink

I have looked into water cooling systems, they are reliable as long as you set them up correctly. I.E. get someone else to do it for you.

(which costs 5 times as much)

i have a volcano 9. its meant for athlons and pentiums. But its also meant for overclocking. that means, it might be even louder than the fan that you already have. due to the fact that it needs to cool everything down by having such a powerful (yet sort of noisy) fan.

and you don't need a new fan for your vid card.

I am using a Volcano 7 fan w/my Athlon XP+ 2000 and i have no complaints about it at all. It is quite quiet and it cools my CPU very well. I highly reccomend Volcano fans to anyone.
sincerely,

>>you really have to be burnt by one of these charcoals to find out

you obviously haven't seen or touched a voodoo 3 before .

You should be fine, as long as you don't overclock... then, it's up to the design of the heatsink and fan of your 9500 Pro card.

I've touched a Voodoo3. No where near the temps of the RAM chips of the Radeon.
Heck it burned my finger the other day... hmph. Im going to use staples as a temporary heatsink.

my friend's volcono 5 for his 1700+, its pretty quiet.

i have a volcano 9, and its pretty loud.

I'm going to get one of those, it's suppose to help cooling and better airflow

My Anthlon Xp 2100+'s retail fan isn't loud but I think it sucks. It's normally at 55C idel and 65C working. I haven't overclocked anything. I have plenty of open space and fans in my comp. That's why I want a better fan, but I'm not interested in overclocking.

I have a Volcano 7+. It's noticeably louder than the AMD stock fan in medium velocity (normal ~5000 RPM), but it does a much better job at cooling than the stock fan.

Well I modded my P4 fan and tied it to the heatsink of the Radeon using some wires, as wires are harder than strings and wouldnt let the fan move around too much when the casing is moved.
The Volcano7+ is a pretty good heatsink+fan combination. It's the fourth best HS+F for socket 478(supports both p4 and athlons), and is relatively cheap. The very fine fins are shaved from a copper block and bent upwards, no soldering which decreases heat transfer involved. It also comes with a fan speed controller that lets you switch between low, median and high settings. Granted, there are better heatsinks out there for cooling athlons, namely the SLK-800. Those are however expensive, and you absolutely do not need those unless youre going to extreme overclock.
You should also lap the heatsink up to atleast 800grid.
