The unthinkable happened.....

This was not my fault in any way. Blame the eletric company

I was flashing a new BIOS to support the new AntholonXP I bought. Everything was going well, until the power turned off and on during the initial flashing. Now i'm stuck with an expensive paperweight. I do think my BIOS has a boot-block, but I have no idea how to activate it. If that won't fix it, what are my options?

If it helps, I'm using an Award BIOS.

ummm....there's a little problem. their only phone technical support team is in Taiwan, Japan. And last time I sent an e-mail to them, 2 years ago, they hadn't sent anything back.

I was looking in http://students.juniata.edu/gehrigm9/biosfaq.htm under "HELP! My BIOS is gone and i have no video!!" and my floppy still works. However, I have no Windows startup disk made up. So I'll have to seach for those files listed. It might be stupid anough to work

Could someone copy these files from a windows startup disk for me? please:

command.com
drvspace.bin
io.sys
msdos.sys

Too big to put in one file. I really think that the maximum file size should be like 500kb or something.

Thanks for the site, but Han already sent me the files I needed. Now all I have to do is to wait to go home.

By what I was reading, this is actually a "first resort" before replacing the chip. And I don't think my chip can be removed. To be honest, why would those BIOS chips have a non-writable area?

Well there is one solution that should work but it is a tricky one. It is called HOT FLASHING.
Well what do you do:

1. Find somebody with the same Motherbord as yourz, and willing to take a risk
2. Boot his computer with a bootdisk and flash software
3. After booting up replace your bios-chip with his
4. Flash the bios
5. Now put your bios-chip on your own MB agian, and it should work.

I did it a while ago and it worked. Only had some trouble getting the bios-chip of the MB.

Use this only if you really know what you are doing

EDIT: Just got the same idea at the same time

I believe Unicron has the same mobo as me. Hell, if the bootable floppy doesn't work, I'm buying a new mobo. A piece of **** anyways.

Kirby.. It does work. You said your floppy works right? But you have no video. Perhaps it is looking for your bios file. Try putting it on a floppy and sticking it in when you turn the computer on. I have done this before with an Award BIOS and it worked. I have also done this with a Compaq computer and it worked great.

yup. The floppy does work. By what I heard, you put in a value in an autoexec.bat file, your BIOS file you want to flash, the flashing program, and some other files. It should automatically boot up and fix it. The only reason why video doesn't work is because it's only supported for ISA video cards. But the automation should do it just fine.

When you come and think about it, this would of never happened if the electric company knew how to keep the juice flowing.

give the electric company a big fat lawsuit!!! and see if they will replace your mobo. It's a long shot, but when you talk about lawsuits, companies crumble...

I can't file a lawsuit, I'm still a minor in Massachusetts. But my parents can, but they will just complain on how it was your fault to flash it in the first place.

But anyways, I'm going home soon, I'll let everyone know Monday how it went. Wish me luck again

You could go to http://www.badflash.com there they can either sell you a new chip altogether or reflash your old one. It's $20 USD for a new chip and $10 to get it reprogrammed though, so if you've got an older board it might just be better to get a whole new board.

Smile Good news

That bootable floppy did work I had some troubles with my first try (all the files Han gave me) but I formatted a bootable floppy from my brother's computer, put in the files and the atuoexec, boot it up, and I'm back in business

And about the new chip I bought, I bent alot of the pins while putting it in the slot (my bad) now I have to wait a week or 2 to take it back.
