dvd-r problem!!

any help would be great... i have a dvd-writer but for some reason when i put an empty dvd-r into the tray, it doesn't recognize anything is in it. however, when i put in a dvd-rw, it says there's a cd-rw that needs to be formatted. i'm not sure what to do about this. i'm thinking maybe there's some kind of communication error between the computer and the drive, but since it reads the dvd-rw find, it might not be the case. i'm really confused guys. any ideas?

Really depends on your software, I wonder do programs like Nero, ect recognise DVD writers?

I know this may sound stupid, but make sure that it actually supports dvd-r. Some drives only support rewritables....

Actually why didn't I think of that. a GREAT DEAL of DVD RW Drivers don't work with standard DVD R's...

This sound really strange...have you tried to update dvd-r firmware & drivers? However, it probably depends on your recording software.

taken from www.vcdhelp.com :

Today there are three competing DVD recording standards:

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a none rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 87% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 68% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a none rewritable format and it is compatible with about 81% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 68% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

DVD-RAM
DVD-RAM has the best recording features but it is not compatible with most DVD-ROM drives and DVD-Video players. Think more of it as a removable hard disk. This format is supported by DVDForum.

Basically forget about ram. It's crap

As for the other two the jury is still out.

Er no. DVD+ has an extra feature which allows you to append extra video onto the disk without needing to write extra leadin etc (saves space).

The best bet for ppl is to buy a dual format drive (writes both dvd-r(w) and dvd+r(w).

Which currently are pretty expensive.

Well I myself have the Pioneer A04 (DVD-R).
It works like a charm and is/was the first to supportr doublesided dvd-r dics as well.
