Smile Playing PSOne games on a PS2

I know this has nothing to do w/PC hardware, but I really need help here. How do you play a PSX game on your PS2? I put the game in, then PSX Logo comes up and stays there. I can hear the sound, but I all I see is the PSX logo. Other times all I get is a black screen. I am about ready to give up on the PS2. I mean it, I'm about ready to take it back and say to h*** w/it. Is this machine broken or am I missing something here. I tried 3 PSX games w/it, Spyro, Gauntlet Legends, and Army Men 3D and it did the same thing w/all three. It plays PS2 games and DVDs just fine, but it does not seem to want to play original PSX games. Any help would be GREATLY appriecated. Otherwise it may very well be, good bye PS2.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

I would suggest taking it back to the store and getting it exchanged if at all possible.

As you may have heard once, I rented a PS2 for a week once, and it died on the second day. Only in my case it wouldn't read a DVD of any sort. However, the symptoms were much the same.

I am very sorry to hear your story sx/amiga. I was seriously hoping you would have a good time with it.

No, it supports PSX games out of the box.

Thanks Ninja, I think that is exactally what I will do. This a refurbished unit, but it should still be able to play PSX games. I think I will exchange it for a new one (yes, I'll have to for over $20 dollars more) then I should no more problems, hopefully.

I have played PSX games on my PS2, I heard that about 2% of PSX are not playable on it. The PS2 has some extra settings if you go to the System Configuration option on boot up (with no cd in the drive). You can set the cd speed higher and also filtering. I suggest you have a look at how these options are set and turn them both off. I know for a fact that FF8 PSX version does not run with the increased cd speed option when it is switched on. Give this a try, hope this helps

re are only a couple of games that it doesn't like. You should be able to just put the disc in the drive and go.
You may want to have gone to the options first and turned on Texture filtering and fast drive speed....
It wont work with Import games or copies unless it's chipped.

It runs my PSOne games, though mine is chipped with Messiah.

chipping may overcome the problem but then again it could have been the problem in the first place. better off getting a new one and being able to use it out of the box.

Bgnome is right...you never know what happened in the refurbishing...It does run the PS2 games so we suppose they can get away with it. UncleClive is also right. In the configuration menu you have the ability to speed up load times or do some minor graphic enhancement. Perhaps these functions are preventing the game from running. The few games that do not run in PS2 are majority Japan titles, and we know for sure that the games you are trying should work correctly.

We have had our PS2 for well over a year now with no problems found. Could it be luck of the draw? We know some consoles get shipped with defects, but wow..sounds like some of you got some bad luck....
sxamiga...take it back...it may be a refurbished unit from an initial rushed to the shelves batch. Kind of like the first released PSX consoles with the crappy power surge problem and crap CD drives...A newer model may prove better

Thanks everyone for all your help and suggestions. I've tried the options and they didn't help any. It seems that I got a bad unit as Dark Watcher and Bgnome indicated. I called the store and they said to bring the PS2 back and they would exchange it for another one. I think I will pay the extra money and get a new one (as Bgnome suggested). I'll test it and then post here and let everyone know how it does.
sincerely,

Well, I returned the refurbished PS2 and got a new one. I tried it out w/the external TV tuner and it still would not play PSX games. So, I tried it out on my Commodore 1702 composite monitor and the PSx games played fine. So it does not seem to be problem w/the PS2, but more likey one w/the video display. I don't fully understand it because it seems that if it can display PS2 games and DVDs properly (which it does) then it should be able to display PSX games as well on my PC Monitor and my Laptops monitor (PSX games don't display there properly either). Anyway, I'm going to keep the PS2 since it is not at fault and since I bought the 5.6 inch screen that attaches to it. I guess I'll just have to enjoy Army Men 3d on the small screen. Thanks again everyone.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

Looks like you just spend a bit more dough for nothing. Oh well, at least it guarantees your PS2's life a bit longer. And it's got a warranty too this time.

I had that problem with my old TV tuner, it was a pinnacle one. Try using DScaler, or get a Hauppage tuner.

Thanks Kane, I just may look into the Hauppage tuner since Fry's Electronics (a store near me) carries that brand. As for the DScaler tuner, I have never heard of that one.
Thanks Ninja, at least I know it is not the PS2 and I can live with it not playing PSX games on my Computers if I have to.
Shiori, you are correct about the warrenty. That is worth the extra money to me.

DScaler is a rogram t replace the tuner's own software. It means that you can get more outta your TV card. Example, I played a PAL 60 game on it before, and it didn't wanna know. DScaler gets it to work fine

Thanks Kane. I downloaded DSacler and I am going to give it a try. I'm also going to look for an S-Video cable which might slove my problem. Plus I found a TV turner made by Aver which might work if all else fails. So I am not dead yet.

Just out of curiousity, can you use that PS2 monitor cable (that comes with the Linux kit) for playing games?

edit: mmm, it's not out yet, is it?
