Arrrggg!!! My Video Card burned out...

At least that's what PNY said when I contacted them. My new video card (see below), that I just bought for $200 dollars just two weeks ago, was burned out all along. The representative said that the memory fried, even before I installed the card. Guess what this means?

1) I need a new case. My case is way too small.

2) I need to upgrade my power supply to 350 watts (it was 300).

3) I need a better cooling setup. The way my case is set up, the CPU is right under the power supply.

What a pain. I have papers I have to write. I have things I gotta do. All of these things won't get done because of a video card that doesn't have any cooling thingie on the memory. Life stinks... It really does.

Oh, and for those of you who are having video problems and may be wondering what the symptoms of a ruined video card are, look for these:

1) When the computer starts, the video has garbled ascii characters all over the screen. This symptom even appears in the BIOS.

2) You have "melted" colors all over the screen. Colors look like they are in places they don't belong.

3) Your computer has frequent drawing problems. Sometimes when you close a window, the window closes, but the screen doesn't look like it was closed.

4) The computer fails to restart or shutdown.

5) The monitor goes into "standby" mode all by itself. Sometimes it turns on to give you a teaser as to what is happening, but when you start figuring it out, the monitor goes back into standby mode.

6) Your computer hangs frequently.

7) After a scandisk (you can imagine how many of these I went through before finding out my problem), the screen displays multicolor lines all over the screen and the computer crashes.

If you have three or more of these symptoms, then you may have a trashed video card. I don't want anyone to go through the stuff I did. I hope this sets an example for all.

Thank you and good night.

~Stupid video card....~

I guess i should be thankful that i have a full tower with a 420 watt power supply... and 4 80mm fan bays...

one question... are they going to replace your vid card ... or even offer you like a new card if you pay them $50 or something....

PNY has a lifetime warrenty (only with a valid receipt). If PNY didn't have a lifetime warrenty, I would be dead.

AtomicFeline, this brings back memories....

http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthre...392#post110392
Ah.... good memories...

Anyways, I don't think you have to do all those upgrades that you think you do. I have a 250W PSU, a Midtower ATX case, and a GeForce 3 now, and I have no heating problems at all.

well... my CPU runs a little hotter than I would like... (48C), and my hard drive has been known to fail when overclocking... but for regular conditions, it's awesome.

I dunno, 300 watts should be enough for a GeForce 4. My case is setup the same as yours with the CPU right under the PSU and it doesn't have any problems at all. My videocard also has no heatsink on the memory (they don't really require it) and it works fine. I think it was just a faulty videocard to start with.

It WAS faulty to begin with.

Oh, and my CPU runs at 53C when playing an intense 3d game. I'm telling you, my case is too small. Who knows what else in there was frying over the past year.

Yeah, a lifetime warrenty is great if the card lasts for at least a month. It's the end of my first semester in college. I have papers to write and stuff to study! My computer can't crap (this word wasn't said in vain) out on me now!

Still guys, you gotta admit that getting a bigger case and a new power supply can't hurt.

My CPU runs at upto 68c loaded and its a P4.

A bigger case and a new power supply cant hurt no nothing but your wallet. Why get new hardware when your old ones work just fine?

Han, my friend, 68c is an unholy number on a CPU. How in the world could your CPU run at such a temperature unless you aren't using a fan?

I dont know. Im using a Volcano7+ HS/F and Arctic Silver3 and it still runs that hot. Demigod said that I shouldnt worry about it unless Im getting crashes. If it fries in 3 years time, I'll contact Intel for a replacement. :/

If heat is your problem just get some case fans (one to intake air, one to expel) or leave your case open. Getting a bigger case won't necessarily help dissipate heat.

But getting a case that can hold more fans can. Currently, I have 4 fans in my computer. Two on the case. One on the CPU and one on the Video Card. I'm looking at a case that has 4 fans.

Talking bout fans, Im using a 6 fan casing here. 4 intakes and 2 exhausts, 3 exhausts including the PSU, a CPU fan and the old Intel CPU fan cooling the GF2(Could put it somewhere strategic...), totalling 9 fans. But still my temps...

68c for a p4? thats really hot..i have xp1800 and it runs at 55-57c max when playing. i know its hotter than most of ur cpu's but i live in a tropical country and dont even have arctic silver on. but still, intel cpu's are known for its low temp..i think u should take a closer look at ur cpu. coz ur almost at the temp threshold of ur cpu..atleast amd cpu's have high threshold. u dont want it to be ruined in such a short time right??
BTW i think i damaged my vcard too. its only a gf2mx400 but still, i dont have the money to by a new one.
but its still ok, but i had to underclock both core and mem by 5mhz i think. i will get a 9500 pro or a ti4200 next year, proly when gffx comes out. are the ati drivers better now? coz thats the only thing stopping me from choosing an ati product, but i heard that 9500 pro is

How the devil would you get a P4 up to 68C? Isn't that impossible?

68c is old news. It hit 73c that day. Heatsink was HOT. Intel said that I should get a replacement, and the dealer has agreed to replace it for me. My mom isnt free to drive my ass there yet, though. Imagine how it would run without Arctic Silver3 and Volcano7+.

Doesn't a P4 run colder than that without a heatsink or fan though?
