Mode 7 AA on GF3+4 cards

If you are using the new WHQL 40.72 dets, you will have an option for a mode 7 AA mode.

4xS:

Mode 7:

This is not a "special' Nv30 AA method as it currently works with GF3 and GF4 cards.

Thats Interesting. Only works on Geforce 4.0.7.2 dets? I assume I have to over ride Nvidias suggested FSAA?

Here is how to tweak it. I used a nice method of looking for mode 6 FSAA (4xS) and since there is only 1 registry value that has a 6 I was able to change it to 7.

It's a Jpeg so you will see blur.
In game though, the image is so damn sharp and there is NO aliasing anywhere to be found. Of course performance is bodgy at high resolutions 1024x768+.

Notice the leaves? They were showed small signs of aliasing at every other AA mode.

Here's 4xS of Grandia 2, I took a low resolution (640x480 mode) so the Anti Aliasing would be more aparent.

And Here's mode 7, What do you think? Maybe 6x? who knows. 7 is definately superior. Very noticable expecially around the lower left corner.

WOW! You should play FF8 and FF7 on PC with mode 7. The aliasing is basically GONE!. Even 4xS isn't as good in FF7 but now with Mode 7.

800x600 and 640x480 with mode 7 in altest games plays pretty fast. Just don't go to 1024x768 because you will notice performance degradation.

I'm gonna have to try in 1024x786 (I should have a lil more memory bandwith than a geforce 3 (no offense) To see how it runs.

Why did Nvidia hide this 6xS (mode 6) and 8xS(mode 7?) From us?

That is anyones guess.

I don't see why I would take offense to GF4 having more effective bandwidth.

hmm well theres an improvement with 6xS FSAA and 6xS is completely playable at 1024x786.

8xS is another story... Game becomes completely unplayable (Grandia 2) I read that 8xS was actually rotated Grid Multi Sampling... on one of the boards that nvnews linked too

6xS just seems an improved multi sampling technique similar to 4xS

Tried any PC games with the AA modes? Some are slow others are fine.

BOF 3 runs very nice. All PSX games do.

at what resolution? I tried Grandia 2 for the PC. and No One Lives forever 2, they pretty much shared the same results.

6xS playable. Looks better than 4xS, and 8xS pretty much unplayable at any resolution other than 640x480. But fivefeet has said 640x480 is enough for PSX graphics so...

Grandia 2 and No One Lives forever I tested at 1024x786x32 with 6x and 8xS

Kewl. I thought Grandia 2 was only PSX? I wonder if I can buy it at any pc retail outlet.

8xS is a bumber. Though they both run well at 640x480.

Grandia 2 is a PS2/Dreamcast/PC game but we're kinda off topic.

640x480 in 8xS mode was playable completely with Grandia 2.

I did not try 800x600 its probable as 1024x786 is almost double 800x600.

But 6xS has become my new favorite anti aliasing lol for 1024x786 that is ;0

*edit* Interesting, I just tried 8xS again in 1024x786x32 with grandia 2 and it worked fine and wasn't slow at all

It's too bad it doesn't work in OpenGL.
I barely have any Direct 3d games besides Warcraft 3, Empire Earth as well as Age of Mythology Demo and Epsxe (direct3d plugin) with BOF3.

All those run well at 800x600 6xS. 1024x768 is alright but in Warcraft 3 both modes suck performance down the drain. DS with 20-30 monsters on screen is faster than Warcraft 3 with 1 person on screen.

well 8xS is running fairly well for me in grandia 2 PC. I did notice a little choppyness at first, But oddly enough its playable. I took a screenshot of it.

Clarity of 8xS is something I've never before seen.
