Most notably XP chips don't support Dual proccessor boards and MP chips do.

MP processors are for servers, they are like Intels Xeons, XP processors are for common PCs.

MPs are more expensive than XP.
Look for Opterons.

well amd has to have a competition with every intel's processor so the duron is compesation for celeron, xp for p4 and mp for xeons

Actually AMD has all but scrapped the Duron Line, They are using the older version Athlon Xp chips to compete with the intel celeron line. Not only are the athlon XP chips cheaper than the celerons. They are also much better performers.

Consider This. Athlon XP 1600+ has pretty much been deemed faster than a Celeron 2.0 Ghz CPU, and the celeron 2.0 Ghz = 100 Bucks. Athlon XP 1600 = 55 bucks.

Now both are really good overclockers as well. But at this point. Athlon XP 1600+ can OC just as well and at half the price. This is due to it being an early revision of the chip.

newer Celerons may tell a different story. But for now. Athlon XPs are fine value chips

The Athlon MPs never really took off like they should have. A testament to AMD's crappy marketing. The Intel Xeon processors still dominate the x86 server market.

The Opterons won't be available for another 5-6 months. AMD's marketing them towards the lucrative 64 bit server market against the Intel Itanium (Mercedes) and Itanium 2 (McKinley).

There are no 2.5 Ghz AMDs. Currently the fastest AMD chip runs at 2.13 Ghz, in the form of the Athlon XP 2600+. A KT333 or KT400 motherboard would be good for the faster Athlons.

Heating problems won't go away for a while.

Do you think an AMD XP processor is better than Intel's equivalent?

Not better, And atm, its not even a better value, Unless your getting Athlon XP 2000+ and below.

no sh!t.

a 2.1 Ghz (2600+) and a 1.73 (2100+) and can beat a 2.1 Ghz intel. hands down. If you are looking for the fastest, Intel.

If you are looking for better performance, and better price AMD. but amd just can't catch up to intel's speed demon. but if you wait for a while, amd will surely bring a processor that can beat that speed demon at a lower clock rate and bus speed. but then again, intel would have realeased another processor by then.

the 2600+ tests

during the anandtech tests, the amd 2600 won 12/19 times

All that an AMD Athlon processor demands is a rear casing fan, (besides the processor fan)thats it, and it would run like a monster. Heating problems are not that significant anymore, so there is no need to worry about that.XPs run coller then T-Birds.
