Smile Possible New Video Card

Okay, I currently have a GF4 TI 4600 and I am extremely satisfied w/it. But, Fry's Electronics, a store near where I live, recently advertised an OEM Radeon 9700 Pro for $299. I have heard that the Radeon 9700 Pro is a better card than the GF4 TI 4600. Now my questions are, is the 9700 that much better than the TI 4600 and if so, should i take advantage of this sale price and purchase one and then replace my TI 4600? Or should I stay with my TI 4600, which as I said I am extremely satisfied with, and wait for the NV30, which is supposed to top the 9700 pro, to come out? Thanks for any advice and replies.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

I would stick with the Geforce 4 if I were you. Until they make a card that will make your jaw drop then stick with it. I only upgrade when somethng looks a whole lot better. Like I used to have an 8 meg now I have a 64 meg the next one is gonna be 128 or 256! Hehe but until that day I'm not gonna. Beleive me stick with the card! And yes I know 128 is out now! I'm not dumb.

Well sxamiga I think U should wait for NV30, why? cause ur system and Vcard would give U more then required performance for the new upcoming. With full detailed gfx and resolution. Since U seem to be extremely satisfied, therefore this deal won't be much useful. Wait for NV30!

GET THE RADEON!!!!!!!!!!

If you have the money, and can get a deal on the card, just do it. That card is the sweetest thing I have seen since watching Jennifer Love Hewitt wag her butt around in The Tuxedo! The card is supposed to be about 30% faster than a GeForce4 Ti, and handles FSAA a lot better. Did I mention it supports TruForm as well?

I wouldn't sxamiga. Not because the Radeon 9700 is a bad card, And thats a pretty good deal.

But the upgrade just isn't a logical upgrade. You'll see a performance increase alright. But I don't see how its gonna warrant that huge wad of cash missing in your wallet.

Quite honestly if I were in your shoes. I'd just wait for the Nv35, And then do a massive overhaul on your PC.

But if you really dig Running games at 1280+1024 Reso with 4X FSAA + 16 x anistropic filtering. By All means go for it. otherwise just wait till you see competition for the card. Then you can make a more subjective decision.

Umm since there ain't much of a performance gain after you switch from Ti4600 to Radeon 9700, I'd say no to the upgrade. It's a lot of money for small performance gain. Unless you plan to overclock it after a better driver comes out...

The Radeon 9700 Pro is significantly faster than the GF4 but you'll only see the speed benefits in high resolutions (1024+) with FSAA and anisotropic filtering. At lower resolutions they pretty much even out. You'd also need a very fast CPU (Anandtech tested with a P4 2.53 Ghz) to keep the card well fed. The card is pretty fast though. At 1280x1024 it's around 30% faster than the GF4 Ti 4600 and with FSAA and 16x anisotropic filtering enabled it is more than twice as fast (100%+). It really depends on the type of gamer you are. If you like playing at high resolutions with 4xFSAA and anisotropic filtering and want the fastest frame rates then the Radeon 9700 is right up your alley. However, if you're satisfied with the performance of your current card then just keep it for now and look for another opportunity. $299 US is a lot of money to spend on a videocard and you'll only see the benefits at the highest quality settings. For PSX emulation in general it shouldn't make any difference at all.

Just to round off what demigod says. In emulation you'll see absolutely no difference. As your geforce 4 Card is hardly strained by emulation right now.

Just a quick question for all the people suggesting to wait for the NV30: Why?

nVidia still hasn't really shown anything about the card yet, and for all we know it performs at the same speed as the Radeon 9700. At any rate, the Radeon 9700 is still the king of the hill for a good long while, as we won't see an NV30 on shelves for a while. If sx/amiga wants the latest and fastest video card right now, and he can get it for a good price, then there is no better one to have.

Eh? I suggested him wait for the nv35, That the jump to the Radeon 9700 wouldn't be that big for him.

Not to warrant spending 300 bucks on the card. But thats my opinion.

Well I don't really see the need to upgrade that card yet. I still have a gf 3 and it still flies on most games. I'd hang on for a couple of months til your present card "matures" a bit.

They're not going to get much better than the Radeon 9700, believe me. The R300 rocks the boat in both quality and performance. It has very efficient, bandwidth-saving anisotropic filtering for excellent, crisp 3D graphics and is more than twice as fast as the GF4 when FSAA is enabled. When I first saw the benchmarks of it it just made my jaw drop. I couldn't believe how much faster it was compared to the GF4. Feature-wise it's also superior, as it is the world's first DX9 compliant card.

It's pretty much the same as the Radeon 9700 except it is built on a smaller die (0.13 ľon) and has fewer transistors (R300 has ~100 million). It should have a faster core and better multi-texturing capabilities compared to the R300 but that's about it. It's nothing revolutionary compared to the Radeon 9700 (although it is to the GF4).

Not really. The Matrox Parhelia is out already and it's not really that fast. It performs on par with the Radeon 8500 in most situations. It's not for gamers (and Matrox admitted they weren't aiming for the gaming market), but more for graphics artists and corporate users. Its tiple-head feature is pretty impressive, as well as its 10 gigabit color.
