I'm sure ATI will come out with something to beat the NV30.

And nVidia will counter, and hopefully a true contender will appear out of nowhere.

Well, there are some critics who believe that ATI is working on another chip at the sametime, so when nvidia release thier NV30, ATI will get their new chip on stores the moment after to stab nvidia on the back . There are alot or rumors going on, but on the other hand, this might happen

I think it's more likely that when the NV30 arrives, ATi will release an updated version of the R300 (Radeon 9700) core.

We won't be able to guage anything till it arrives.

Actually demigod. NWN Ati users will not be able to enable Shiny Water. No Radeon cards can enable shiny water... it was a perk specific to nvidia cards... Geforce 3 + that is..

These competitions are always healthy for the consumers, until they play the fair game.

That is probable. ATI is rumoured to be moving to a 0.13 ľon process soon which should allow them to add a second texture unit to the Radeon 9700 Pro.

Yeah and after that a new breed of army will rise. It is graphic card army. A new type of war, computers war that will never end...
Untill then both of them will lost their profit.

It's all about pride and reputation my friend, not profits (not directly anyways ). They each want to have the fastest GPU out there. The high-end market is very niche, not many people buy them due to the high price. It's the value/middle-end that get most of the sales. If you take a look at the ads in computer magazines you'll hardly ever find a GF4 Ti 4600 or a Radeon 9700 in the system specs. It's mostly GF2/4 MX and the occasional Radeon 256. However, having the fastest product will look better on you and raise your reputation, resulting in better stocks and more familiarity. ATI has garnered much respect from the gaming community with the Radeon 9700.

Quite honestly I am "very" curious how the NV35 and R350 chips are going to look like.

I've never been one for first generation DX cards, (geforce 256, Geforce 3 Ti, and now the nv30) I like to generally wait till there next generation of DX generation cards...

IE NV15. NV 25. and next NV 35.

Yeah, i agree with that. the REAL Nv30 (or the NV35 as Chrisray pointed out) is still underprocess. I dont think is wise to get an Nv30 when it comes out, but i would rather wait for the next generation.....

I would like to have an ATI Radeon 9700pro or NV30 for the Bragg'n rights but it would be pointless to get one now, because there won't be any games that make use of the advanded features until sometime next year...and then there will be better cheaper cards

...but it sure is hard to resist haven bragg'n rights for a few months

That's always the case though. There is always something better coming up. You have to buy something eventually or else you end up stuck with a TNT2 always waiting for the "next big thing". That's why it's usually best to just compare what's out there right now, or what's out there when you feel like you need a upgrade, and not get caught up in looking too far ahead at what's coming. IMO NV35 is looking too far ahead since NV30 isn't even out the door yet. R350 is probably going to be a .13u 9700 with an extra texture pipeline, and DDR-II. ATi has already demonstrated a 9700 running with DDR-II on techTV so it probably isn't that far off. But again none of this stuff is actually out yet.

not really,.....soemtimes the first generation of a new 3D card would contain some problems. Even if it dont, the next generation would contain a few enhancements up for grabs . I didnt really mean that you have to wait forever

I always buy the next generation of the 3d current chipset. Simply because I like seeing "what" these cards can do. First cards are always new. The features they add. While nice. Are rarely taken advantage of. And the next generation version of the card is almost always improved upon.

Example Accuview Anti Aliasing Engine.
Duel Vertex Shading. ect.

Well, as someone already mentioned here you're never going to be able to upgrade if you keep holding back for the next big thing. I think the best thing to do would be to just upgrade when you have the cash. You should also look for something with good price/performance ratio (GF4 Ti 4200, Radeon 9000 Pro) so you get the most bang for your buck. I think ChrisRay has a point though. Most second generation products just extend the technology of the previous one (at least for Nvidia cards):

TNT - TwiNTexel technology (multi-texturing)
TNT2 - Faster core, memory, better optimization

GeForce 256 - Hardware T&L, quad pixel pipeline, DDR memory
GeForce 2 - Faster core, memory, 2nd gen. hardware T&L, second texel unit

GeForce 3 - Programmable vertex & pixel shaders, LMA
GeForce 4 - Faster core, memory, second vertex unit, LMA II

Nvidia products seem to follow this system (although ATI doesn't). They first introduce the technology, then extend upon it and make it better. It takes some time for developers to adopt new features so it'd be best to wait a generation so that when you finally do purchase something there's already some support for its features in the industry. Still, when something as fast as the Radeon 9700 Pro comes along it this rule doesn't quite apply. Even if its DX9 features aren't applicable to any game its sheer speed and image quality more than justifies it.
