Scanner help...

I have an HP OfficeJet R40xi combo scanner/copier/printer... the printer is shared across the network, is there any way to share the scanner as well?

well if, this is an all purpose machine as you said ( scanner, printer copier all in one) and the printer could be accessed through the netwrok, i dont see a reason why the scanner shouldnt be accessed by network. i mean if the printer could be accessed then the scanner shoild be accessed as well,................unless there is somekinda restriction from the admin

I checked the properties of the scanner on the machine it's hooked up to... there isn't even a way to share th through winXP. I was hoping the use of a 3rd party program could do the job,

I don't think its currently possible to share a scanner over a network. True it's probably simple enough feature to add to an OS, but I don't think it will be implemented in the future. The reason is that you have to insert the image to be scanned into the scanner. Therefore you have to be at the pc which has the scanner attached to it anyways, making networking it a bit pointless.

Ah well that you can do. Enable file sharing on your computer, and share your my pictures folder with read/write access. Then map that folder to a drive letter on the computer with the scanner. Now all you have to do is get your mate to scan the image and save it to that drive and the file will be on your machine where you can edit it.

Except that the comp it's hooked up to is used for work, and no one's gonna stop in the middle of it to scan a pic for me THAT'S the problem

Well you could always bombard them with IM's until they do it just to get you to shut up

Well if there on your internal network you can always open a command window and type (no Quotes)

"net send MrX Oi ! have you scanned that pic yet!!!!!"

That'll cause a popup to appear on their machine (assuming that their user account name is MrX)
