ACPI question...

Do I have to disable ACPI in the BIOS so that I can turn off my machine using the power button when I'm in, say, DOS mode to flash a new BIOS? If so, what are the implications to my current WinXP install?

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking... you just want to turn off your computer manually, by the power button? If that's the case, you probably don't need to switch ACPI off, all mobos I have seen have a way of doing this. For my A7V, I just have to hold the power button for 4s.

About the ACPI + WinXP, I can tell you that if you disable ACPI you won't be able to boot back in WinXP until you:

1) Reinstall it;
2) Switch back ACPI on.

This is because WinXP install different kernel versions for ACPI and Non-ACPI computers.

My motherboard is ACPI compliant. I just enable it in the BIOS. I press the power button for four seconds and voila! Just like clicking Shutdown in the start menu! It's a nice feature. Windows XP does a really nice job with ACPI.

I had a problem with this on an old board. You know you can just pull the power cord. hey its not the best but it'll do the trick. otherwise if your psu has a power off button you can use that to shutdown. its not something im really worried about since i run my box 24-7.

the reset switch shouldnt be affected by acpi and thats the only important button.

and for power controls you leave acpi on for windows. if you right click and go to properties on the desktop menu their's a tab for power features. atleast their is in 2k so xp should be similar. you'll figure it out. pretty basic. you can set it to auto shutdown etc.

in my bios i have an override option that gives me control over it. it all depends on what your motherboard lets you do.

good luck

Hmm, pressing down for 4 seconds eh? My mobo manual didn't tell me that, but it's worth a try I guess.

as far as i know, when you turn of ACPI on an win xp, ur pc won't turn off automatically, as in u have to press of the power button to complete its task.

when turned on, ur pc does all this for you

in win9x case, no need to turn ur ACPI on cause it does this automatically.
