Mine ran at a similar temperature until recently. I added a few extra fans, and now it runs at about 45C.

You get used to the noise of a jet plane in your room surprisingly fast though.

My Athlon XP 1800+ stays around 52-53C average and after I do heavy work and need to reboot, it's max I have seen so far has hit 59C, I got two fans and a fan exhaust to suck out hot air on my computer too, but it's been this way since May (and I have yet needed to shut down my computer as well ever since, hehe)

My 1700+ goes at about 46-52C, and upto 55C under 100% cpu load (damn Mozilla flash bug)

Athlon XPs really run hot with the stock fans. Try upgrading the HSF, and you could try removing the cover of your case in the meantime and sticking an electric fan to it as a temporay measure, like I do.

hehe, my temps with just a HSF in my comp and a circulation fan against the open side idles at around 48... under load it doesn't seem to go past 53, though...

this is just until i get my thermaltake case, and either a volcano 7+ or a thermalright slk-800 w/ a vantec tornado (wonder how my roommate is gonna like that). the damn thermalright costs a kidney, though.

Ok,i guess ill just have to use my tiny deskfan for the mean time. i played some games last night and it hit the 68c mark. but not more than that. is volcano good? most hsf here cost around $40 or less..there are others more expensive but i dont think i want em. howbout casing fans..like one that plugs into a pci slot or a cdrom bay perhaps. what do u think guys?

the volcano 7+ is a great HSF for the price... (don't have to buy the heatsink AND the fan, like the slk-800).

anyway, if you don't want a loud HSF, you're probobly going to end up buying the heatsink and fan seperately... if you get a heatsink that can hold an 80mm fan, get one that moves 30-40 CFM of air... should be quiet enough for ya

ps. 68 degrees is quite hot...

Well I have a T-Bird, not an XP, but it runs around 60 in Summer and 48-52 in Winter. I'v total of Six fans inside my PC, but the one doing the Job is the one right behind the Processor, which is exhausting the air out.

How much hotter does the computer get if you overclock the processor?

it doesn't get much hotter until you start upping the voltage for the cpu, so you can overclock higher and more stable...

so it depends on how far you go with your o/cing.

re overclocking temps,
I have my t-bird 1000 running at 1.31ghz at the moment (9x145mhz instead of the stock 10x100)
I have upped the voltage from stock 1.6 to 1.88 as well to stabilize the chip at these higher speeds and my temps at the time of typing this are (just finished playing UT) =
board temp - 24.1c
cpu temp - 35.1c
power temp - 41.4
Thats lower than all of your unclocked chips

what HSF combo do you have on ur cpu?

im pretty much decided on the volcano 7+... i don't need a jet-engine sound coming from inside my case. :P
(unless, of course, i see a cost and sound effective alternative)

err u got me on the jet engine point
I have a Thermoengine v60 with a delta fan on top and the stock 4 or 5000 rpm fan screwed on the side with a socket7 hsf on my graphics card and ex power supply fans as in/out/hard drive coolers and a twin fan psu so above average cooling, but that wasnt my point I was just pointing out that overclocked systems run just as/even cooler than, stock cpus.

um, currently my Duron 950 (default to 9,5x100) runs at ~1045MHz (9,5x110), and it's surprisingly stable, despite the odd FSB clockspeed. under heavy load it's temperature is about 45°C. will temperature rise high if i'd change FSB clock to 133MHz? without changing the multiplier, of course (i plan on grabbing a pencil sometime, though)

nyaa

edit: grammar errors

jegHegy I'd be amazed if it even boots up at that speed (9.5x133=1263mhz!)
Spose its worth a try though as long as u dont mind possibly frying your chip (doubtful), can u up the cpu voltage on your motherboard?
If it dont work just reset the bios.
Mine clocks fast because I have a great stepping code (an axia) and I've upped the voltage but I dont think yours will go that high on stock voltage.

my old duron 950 would actually run fairly stable at 1.2ghz, but i didn't screw with the fsb... i used a trusty #2

it started to get less and less stable as i continued to run it at that speed, though (as in days, not hours )... i didn't want to risk it rebooting in wc3, so i clocked it back down. i'd guess that if you have a good cooling system and a lot of luck you could get it stable at 1.2.

im trying to resist the urge to get the slk-800 and stick a 92mm vantec tornado on it. 119 CFM... i just don't know if it would be too loud for me. what does the delta sound like?

edit: i think my voltage was 1.9@1.2ghz...

I have an Athlon XP 1700+ and it came w/an AMD Fan and Heatsink. I have an exhaust fan, a case fan, and a fan on my video card. My XP stays right around 50 to 54c all the time, even on hot summer days (it does get hot here in the Sacramento Valley in California) and at full load as well.
sincerely,
sx/amiga

My xp2000 idles about 32c - 34c but under load it hits between 59c - 61c.
It also depends on your mobo as it needs to have sensors in the correct place. My motherboard actually has the thermo sensor touching the cpu so i know this is accurate, but i have read that other mbob's like asus actually sometimes tell you the wrong temp by as much as + or - 10c.
