Intel releases Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz

Read all about it @

Anandtech: Intel's Pentium 4 2.80GHz - Moving to the Head of the Class
THG: Speed Isn't Everything: P4/2800 Meets Athlon XP 2600+

Intel retakes the lead with the latest revision of their Pentium 4 microprocessor. Well, it's not exactly re-taking the lead, since AMD's Athlon XP 2600+ hasn't been released yet. AMD will be releasing a better CPU in the next month or so, but it will just barely keep up with the P4 2.6 and 2.66 Ghz CPUs. Something I noticed was that the Athlon XP no longer outperforms the P4 at the same model number, even with the more modest model numbers on the XP 2400+ and 2600+. On most tests the Athlon XP 2600+ is a bit slower than the P4 2600 (and that's on a 100 Mhz bus). Of course the Athlon XP still holds a price advantage but Intel CPUs are a lot more overclockable. The P4 2.6 Ghz runs at 100 Mhz FSB, overclocking it to 133 Mhz would bump it up to 3.5 Ghz! Let's hope the Athlon XP 2800+ (rumoured to be on a 166 Mhz FSB) can provide some better competition.

in my opinion a processor release should be posted in the Hardware discussion no in News submissions

Interesting comparisions between the done tests and the charts, I'd like to see the AMD's new processor against the P4 @ 2.8GHz

If only The P4 can get Cheap compatibility with the Rambus then it will RULE 2 the max. Thats why AMD have been one step ahead for a while.

Check the benchmarks above. On both the Tom's Hardware and Anandtech benchmarks the P4 2.8 Ghz leads the XP 2600+ in all test with the exception of the Maya 3D rendering test (due to the Athlon's superior FPU power). The XP 2600+ performs similarly to a P4 2.6 Ghz in most tests. Both the test systems on the Anandtech benchmark use DDR333 RAM. However, the Athlon hardly benefits from DDR333 due to its slow FSB. When the 333 Mhz FSB Athlon comes around it'll perform much better.

Rambus is dead, my friend. Intel is now openly supporting DDR333 for the Pentium 4. RDRAM isn't that much faster anyways. In fact, DDR333 RAM is slightly faster than PC800 RDRAM and DDR400 should be faster than PC1066 as well. I believe Intel is also planning a dual-channel DDR333 platform for the upcoming P4 (Prescott) chips.

i can't wait to see prescott vs. hammer. Intel's got a huge advantage with raw speed, so we'll have to see how AMD's optimizations can help out hammer.

I want to see the 64-bit consumer applications that these chips will use.

but still... amd can still out perform intel's cpu at the same clock speed with a less price tag.
