Help me fix my brothers computer before I rip his head off

This is ticking me off. He won't stop asking, but I have no clue either. Hopefully, someone can help:

It all started a week ago when he got a "stack" error when he started up 98. When he shut down the computer and turned it back on, it actually won't boot to 98, but freeze at the IDE connector check. He got it to work once before, but I have no idea how he did it, but as soon as he restarted, it will freeze at the same place again.

Here's my brother's specs:

Windows 98 1st edition
400MHZ AMD K6-2
8GB hard drive
64MB ram
Permedia 2 video card
Sound: ???

Anyone has any ideas?

Check all cables. If this doesn´t help, check all cables again. Check the PCI cards too.

Try going into the BIOS and manually setting the IDE devices. You can also try resetting or flashing the BIOS. Test his hard drive as well. Take it out and plug it into your computer and see if it works.

I would also think it's faulty RAM.

I should of said earlier that if he does get it up and running, there is a good chance that it will go to BSOD very soon

I'd try reseating the memory sticks. They might be a little loose.

You say he gets a Stack error eh? Here's a link to Microsoft, about Stack errors in 98. Maybe it can help you. http://support.microsoft.com/default...EN-US;q145799&

It hangs at POST. So it ain't the OS.

But it is due to the OS. Probably a stack overflow error. I once had them.

Slimshady can you give us the Make and Model of the HardDrive? It'll help a lot, I had a similar problem with an old Quantum 4 Gb HDD but I need more info about your drive. You can download Quantum Disk Manager (try to download the oldest version... YES! the oldest.. is the only one with the thing you need) from your HDD site and run some tests.

Try checking the HD in other PC and make it the primary HD. If it still occurs with the same problem... then there is something wrong with the HD.

But that will REALLY CONFUSE Windows98.. unless the other PC has EXACTLY the same hardware config.

You will just check if is functioning... they will just have to see if it still hangs on that part or not. I think t will not confuse the system because it will just auto detect the hardwares of that PC. And when you return it back to its original PC, it will also do the same.

I think Win 98 will autodetect a new HD as long as it is set up right as a master in the BIOS.

OK, some more stuff about his problem:

1. His computer does get out of POST, but it takes 10 minutes just to get to the Win98 boot disk.
2. Even if I do get to DOS by the boot disk, his C: drive is not being recognized.
3. I got out of POST as normal when I disabled Boot Virus Check in BIOS, but 2 resets later, it craps out on me again.

most likely your harddisk has crashed...especially if it's taking 10 mins just to boot up win98....check your harddisk with scandisc or a boot tester from the drive's manufacturer.
