P4 motherboards and Sdram

I am confused as to why companies like Intel are still making P4 motherboards with Sdram. I know it was supposed to help cut the price on ram since at the time PC133 ram was cheaper than RDram. But now both types of ram are almost the same price!

Plus with Sdram, you can't get the full potential of a P4! If anyone has other reasons for this please post them.

Well if money is the case why not just get a P3 motherboard? At least a P3 processor can be fully utilized by the Sdram.

Who told you that SDRAM and RDRAM are almost the same price? Last time I check, RDRAM still cost twice as much as SDRAM for the same amount of memory.

At one time both were the same price. I guess not anymore.

However I still think that if someone had a lot of sdram that they did not want to get rid of and wanted to upgrade to a better processor, they should just get a P3 motherboard since a P4 can not be fully used with Sdram.

Intel paired the P4 with SDRAM because it's cheap. RDRAM is very expensive and with the i850 chipset people had no choice to buy it if they wanted a P4. Although SDRAM is a major bottleneck to the P4 i845 systems have been selling like hot cakes due to its low price. OEMs could finally offer P4 systems for the value market, as well as the high-end segment. I personally shudder everytime I see an ad that puts the two together but they do sell for a very low price and to the average consumer they look to be quite a bargain. Intel needs to sell more CPUs and this is the perfect way to do it.

The P3 is dead my friend. The CPU is no longer a profitable product for Intel. It can't scale higher than 1.4 Ghz and even those are extremely rare. The P4 on the otherhand can scale to extremely high speeds and that's what people want. No one's going to go for a 1.2 Ghz P3/Celeron system when they can get a 1.7 Ghz P4 system for the same price.

cause most ram manufacturers havent completely switched to ddr yet so they are still making sd-ram.

and the main companies like hp and dell that are the REAL customers to the Durami (the ram cartel in taiwain), is the OEMs, not us lowly enthusiasts.

Thus to them it is still cheaper even if the price is close in retail bestbuy stores.

Many people have expressed their discontent with RDRAM. Thankfully there doesn't seem to be a lot of room for RDRAM on Intel's roadmap. Intel's Springdale (?) chipset for the Prescott will feature dual-channel DDR333 support, as opposed to RDRAM. They'll probably make a chipset for RDRAM as well but I think Intel's finally embracing DDR memory.
