It's the best PCI card on the market afaik. A voodoo 5 is better, but then again you'd be relying on homebrew drivers for it, and it's still a bit over a hundred bucks.
So i say, go for it. A bit on the expensive side assuming it's only an MX, but it's better than a voodoo3 IMHO.

With Geforce 2 you would be able to play new games at some good speed and quality compared to your V3. Looking at your budget I think this would be a good choice.

I'd go with a Geforce unless you want to wait for the Radeon 9700 and have the $300+ to buy it.

in price/speed comparison i think ati has got the advantage over nvidia..... the r2 was designed as competitor for the gf3 and still it can keep up with a gf4ti4200 (not the rest)
and gf4mx are worse than gf3. that's all i know.

I think the Radeon 7500 PCI is the closest thing to a GF4 MX PCI. It performs on par with a GeForce 2 Ti.

The GeForce 4 MX 420 performs slightly faster than a GeForce 2 MX 400 so he didn't really get a slower card than what he wanted to get.

the geforce 4 mx is like a higher clocked geforce 2. The major difference is LMA II (light speed memory architecure) that has 4 (i think) memory controllers grabbing data from the video memory (geforce 2 has one memory controller) thus making it more efficent than a geforce 2 and a bit faster (geforce 3 still better).

I think i810 & SiS users should have a look at this tread, a geforce 4MX PCI is definately a good buy if your looking for a card to upgrade and you don't have AGP slots  at least it's faster & has more memory than a Geforce 2 GTS
not bad eh?
