Mobo / Processor advice

Alright,

this is just an adivce post about... you guessed it! Procs and mobos.

Anyway I'm thinking of buying a new one in the next few months (I usually spend about $600 total) and I'm looking for some quotes as to how much I REALLY need to spend.

Mobo requirements
-Capable of going over 512mb ram
-NO onboard sound
-NO onbiard video
-lots of expansion slots (4+)(with AGP) (ISA would be nice but isn't required)
-Good upward mobility (I.e. my current mobo only has a ceiling of 933mhz and I'm already at 800)
-at least 2 usb connections
-*would really like* firewire (again not REALLY required but would be nice)

As far as the type of proccessor, I don't really care what kind it is as long as it's at least 1.5ghz

now how much will this cost me?

A Soyo K7V Dragon Plus. It's got onboard audio, but its CMedia 5.1 Dolby Digital Audio is comparable to a Soundblaster Live!

It goes for between 120-125 USD.

http://www.hardware-unlimited.com/reviews/syk7vdp/

As for the AMD processor, it has to be an Athlon XP. the 1700+ model goes for $70 as indicated on Pricewatch now.

Your *****ting me :eek2:

Shiori, HUGE thanks. LOL this may be coming sooner than a few months! I do have another question. Everyone recoomends pricewatch as the place to go, and I've been there before sure. I've never ordered anything from any of the vendors they list though because I'm worried about reliabilityt in shipping and credit card security. I know pricewatch doesn't handle this directly but I'm wondering if I can trust their vendors? have you yourself actually used pricewatch for parts?

Thanks again

K8 is the upcomming Clawhammer...it's the first true 64bit x86 based cpu by AMD, and will destroy Intel's Pentium IA32 line of processors.

But I dont wanna wait that long. that sounds like it's at least a year down the road. My system is ancient NOW (it was ancient when I bought it two years ago) and needs replacement. I'm looking for a viable solution now.

A 64 bit processor eh? when it does come out I doubt it will be for the consumer and as such WELL beyond my pricerange (About like the Intel Xeon, only worthwile to the corporate sector and priced to match)

If you're looking for a good computer now I would suggest an Athlon with DDR memory. Athlons are pretty cheap (compared to Intel CPUs) and have plenty of processing power.

The AMD Clawhammer is the successor to the Athlon and will be the first consumer level 64-bit processor. It's a 64-bit extension to the x86 architecture, while the Intel Itanium is a pure 64-bit implementation. The Itanium is currently available but it's only for the niche high end server markets. The Clawhammer should be released in the final quarter of this year.

so shiori was right eh? I thought so. so far hers are the best suggestions. (if shiori is female!? if not... umm better than being called 'it' )

EDIYT: What's the big deal with 64bit processors? I upgraded from 16bit x86 to an intel PIII (yes... from an x86 to a P3) didn't really notice much change

The server hammer processor will be called Opteron, the consumer hammer processor will probably be called an Athlon, to maintain familiarity.

You upgraded from a 16bit x86 machien?
really..so the last computer you owned was either a 386SX, 286, or 8086?

I guess if the only game you play is solitier then I guess you won't notice much of a difference going from a 16bit 386SX to a 32bit Pentium 3.

FYI, every x86 based CPU since the 386DX (since in 1985) are 32bit CPU (IA32)...this includes the current generation of Pentium 4's and Athleon XP's. The Itanium is 64Bit but it's not an x86-based CPU.

actually current yields of the clawhammar (going to be called athlon, k8 for now) have only been seen running at about 800 MHz max. Even if the chip is very efficient, it will have to run MUCH faster than that to keep up with intel (plus we all kno that heat will be a factor). Intel built the pentium 4 with incredible scalibility, so u can all say "oh AMD does more in each clock cycle with it's procs then intel" sure, fine, but amd will hit a road block much sooner than intel will. But anyways, AMD is a better bang for da buck.
