My System's Harddisk is developing new habits...!

Whats the new Habit?
While the computer is running, the harddisk would shut down (it seems as the power to it has been cut), the computer would most definitly hang when harddisk data is required, and then it would start again, it would turn back on and everything would be fine. This happened today in the morning when I started the computer.

Can anyone tell me what should I do? I have some very very important data on it, if it is lost then I am so totally screwed.

My old Quantum 2Gb would do that occasionally. I think it was not getting enough power at some point. It would shut off and then start up again hanging my comp. I took out one of my high powered fans and that fixed the problem.

Perhaps your computer is running low on power? I don't think bad sectors will do that. Or at worst your HD may be failing.

I highly doubt the 2 cdroms. I have three. A normal, a cdwriter, and a dvd drive. I found that in my system it was over heating. Check your bios for the auto/emergency shut down/restart. Check the temps too. On the internet you can find your cpu's normal temp. If its too hot. replace the heatsink/fan. Add a fan. Or run it with its side off. Thats what i do, and dust isnt a problem.

Windows has an option to turn off the hard drive after a couple of minutes of inactivity. This is to save wear and tear on the drive and to ensure it's longetivity (kinda like the CD-ROM spinning down, or the monitor turning itself off). The drive will automatically turn itself back on (it will hang for a second or two while doing so) when data is needed so there's no need to worry. My secondary drive regularly turns itself off and spins back up when I need it. If you want to turn this feature off go into power options in the control panel (in Windows XP, I don't know about 98) and you can turn it off there.

Check over heating, checked power options ins control Panel. I changed my PSU a few days ago, but hey I got the more powerful one, so whats the deal with that. It has been three hours and its running fine. Maybe I should arrange for a new one.

One more thing is to check that there are no loose cables on the power connection to the HDD

I wouldn't be too worried about it. When your hard drive abnormally shuts down the OS usually reboots along with it. I've had it happen on me before when I was overclocking and stuff. The hard drive powering down is pretty normal, and as long as it starts back up when you request it there shouldn't be a problem. Now if the hard drive shuts down while you're in the middle of doing something with it then you should consider backing up your stuff and getting a new drive.
