I live in canada, the ps2 i own is also bought in canada. Today i got few dvd movies from hongkong, they don't work on my ps2 so i tried using gameshark's "regin" seletor and sellct regin 3 (hong kong) and still won't play. DOES GAMESHARK'S REGIN THING WORKS OR NOT? (gameshark 2.0)

Ps2 cannot playback DVDs which immediately playbvack the film (only DVD's which go to a menu can be played back). It maybe the case that these disks aren't supported.
Also I don't know if that device supports the new RCE disks (these check for multiregion players and refuse to run if they find one), however I've yet to come accross an RCE disk that wasn't region 1.

RCE disks are new region encoded disks which don't like being used in multi region players.

No that's not what I'm saying. If you have a regionX then it will be multiregion. However the ps2 cannot playback DVDs without an intro menu, even if its a single region.
Normal DVD players are single region. Multiregions are available from specialist suppliers. As for DVD-rom you are mistaken. Most modern pcs has 3 region locks to bypass: Older (RPC-1) DVD-Roms are multiregion however all new drives are single region (RPC-2). However you can flash hacked RPC-1 firmware onto these to make them multiregion. On top of this windows has had region encoding from 98 onwards. In the FE its easily removed (delete 1 regestry key). In SE and Me its a real bastard to remove. However 2K and XP use the same are FE (all the more reason to ditch ME). Finally your player software has region encoding. This can be disabled using DVD Genie.
