Anyway, you don't have to worry about it, the AGP standards are fully backwards and forwards compatible: AGP 1.0 cards (1X and 2X capable) have no problems with AGP 2.0 motherboards (1X, 2X, 4X capable) and vice versa.

actually the via p4x333 and the upcoming SiS648 both support agp 4x (which i think the next ati, nvidia and 3dlabs chips are gonna be). I think also the ati IGP supports agp 8x. Intel does not have any current plans to support agp 8x just like they're shunning ata133

4x is enough for games at the moment.. Maybe when newer games starts using more polygons will we start to need higher agp speeds.. 16x agp?

We need far less latency on the agp port so that system memory used for storing textures and whatnot would actually be good. I have far too much memory not being used.

It should become mainstream in highend videocards and motherboards by the end of the year. The ATi R300 supports AGP 8X, and Nvidia's NV30 likely will too. The Nforce 2 to be released in mid July is also going to have AGP 8x so it would shock me if the NV30 didn't. The SiS Xabre already out also supports AGP 8x. Pretty much every new motherboard chipset from here on out should support it since it's just another feature and features sell whether they have any actually performance impact at all. AGP 2x vs 4x didn't make much of a difference but computer makers out there are always looking for more features to tout.
BTW Intel is supporting AGP 8x, their upcoming dual channel DDR P4 board does have AGP 8x. http://www.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MzIz HardOCP has a preview of the upcoming board. Last edited by Particleman; July 8th, 2002 at 07:33. |

Links?
 http://www.pcisig.com/specifications/pci_x_20 Anyway AGP 8x is around 4gig/sec just like that thing. Take a look at whitepapers

4 GB/s bandwidth? I would think it would be more around 2.12 GB/s.
66 Mhz (AGP bus speed) x 4 (32 bit) x 8 = 2112 MB/s Newer chipsets like the upcoming VIA KT333A chipset will support AGP 8x. It's completely unnecessary (just like AGP 4x was) but it makes the product more impressive and will sell more boards.

I admit that I dont really have a clue about what you guys are talking about (that bit thing, whatever.) , but I got these results anyway. Does that mean that my motherboard supports 4xAGP ? I cant check it though, I click on it and nothing happens...
